Olympic gymnast MyKayla Skinner made sure her forays beyond the mat were just as exciting as her athletic career. After tying the knot with hubby Jonas Harmer, she was looking forward to extending her family. Two years of marital bliss later, the duo became a treble in September with the birth of their daughter Charlotte Jane Harmer. By her own admission, the change of pace and the transition into motherhood has not been easy for the Olympic silver medalist.
MyKayla Skinner has documented every facet of her new life for her fans. From the baby formula tasting to the post-natal bruisings, she made sure every nook and cranny of her sojourn was in full view for her fans. Recently, she placed the few missing pieces of the puzzle by means of a blog post to paint a fuller picture. Here’s what she wrote.

MyKayla Skinner fed the greedy fans anxious for titbits in her life with a long blog post. She published the post on the Miriia blog site with the title “The Story of Charlotte”. Although the suggestive title alludes to a unilateral focus, the post also explores multiple aspects of the gymnast’s life. Surprisingly, the main storyline encapsulated the harrowing pain of normal delivery rather than post-natal joys. MyKayla Skinner had to endure one of the longest and most difficult labors. Her small stature, which is a ubiquitous trait of most gymnasts, coupled with her 6’7″ husband, made it extremely “difficult to deliver my baby”. A cesarean delivery would have been optimum, but she “didn’t want to have a c-section”.
Her doctor advised two alternatives to ease her pain. In her own words, the doctor apparently said, “It’s been three hours of pushing, your baby’s head is right behind your pelvic bone, so we will need to change what we are doing to deliver her safely and keep her heartbeat up. You can opt for a c-section or we can use the vacuum. I feel really safe that we can do the vacuum.” Obviously, this was not ideal, but she had to cope with the whims of a cruel fate.

Skinner admitted that her time on the gym mat nurtured her unconditional resilience. Her experience with Team USA taught her to take every challenge as an opportunity to adapt. Banking on this knowledge, she mustered the strength and was rewarded with a sweet and healthy daughter. Now, with Charlotte in her arms, those challenges of the past are a distant memory.
