Is the Court of Arbitration's decision to strip Chiles of her medal a fair call?

Jordan Chiles is learning to live with heartbreak. Following her disastrous pre-Olympics complication, Chiles has been left shell-shocked to the core. And now, to make things worse, the Court Of Arbitration has come up with more saddening news. Despite new evidence produced by Team USA, the COA has overruled the possibility of revisiting the decision regarding stripping Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal.

As per the orders of the Court Of Arbitration, Chiles will have to return her bronze medal. Now, initially, things were difficult for the Olympic gold medalist to process. However, gradually, as the feelings sunk in, Chiles learned to live with the setbacks. Appearing in a recent interview with CNN, Jordan Chiles looked back at the grim incident as she said, “Things can be really, really hard in your life and things may be stripped from you and you’re going to have to deal with that, and understand that you need to fight for what you’re fighting for… And that’s something that I’ve learned as well in the past three or four months just coming off of Paris.”

Well, things started in Paris itself when initially the scoreboard showed Ana Barbosu of Romania as the winner. However, after Chiles’ performance, Cecile Landi submitted an inquiry, which revised Chiles’ score to higher than that of Barbosu. This meant heartbreak for the Romanian as Jordan Chiles and Team USA leaped up in joy.

But the Romanian outfit did not approve of the decision. With a bitter experience from the Olympics, they went to the Court of Arbitration to challenge the judges. Speaking on the matter, legends like Nadia Comaneci too, opined in favor of the Romanian gymnast. The Court Of Arbitration conducted a thorough investigation of the situation. And surely enough, they found a big mistake from end of the American camp.

According to the ruling, Cecile Landi was late by almost 47 seconds in submitting her query to the judges. For the uninitiated, the IOC rules permit only a minute to submit an inquiry after the last gymnast has performed their routine. Such an unexpected news hit Jordan Chiles like a truck and she went into a shell initially. Chiles switched off from all of her social media and stopped going out. This was until her BFF, Simone Biles made her come out of her hiatus. Now, Chiles is fighting for her rights and vows not to give up easily.

Jordan Chiles continues her fight for glory

After the judgment from the CAS was out, the case seemed pretty much shut. Interestingly, that was not to be. Further scrutiny brought out some baffling facts about the entire procedure. It was found out that there was no official timekeeping equipment at the Olympics. Thus, the exact time when the inquiry was made could not be recorded digitally. This was a huge reason for Chiles to believe that the medal rightfully belonged to her.

Moreover, to further add fuel to the fire, Team USA came up with a video clip. They claimed that the clip had enough evidence that Cecil Landi was well within the 1-minute mark while submitting the inquiry for Jordan Chiles at the Bercy Arena in Paris. Now, Chiles has taken things up to the Swiss Tribunal. With a never-give-up mentality and a zeal for justice, Jordan Chiles has vowed to continue her quest to bring out the truth. As of now, she will be going back to UCLA, where hopefully, reuniting with her college pals will soothe her mind to some extent. But it will always be interesting to see what new details come out of the Jordan Chiles Olympics controversy in the future.
