The world of gymnastics is bursting at the seams currently. Paris Olympics 2024 brought a controversy spree as a lot of legends fell victim to the score revision system at Paris. The social media outrage embarked right after Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu lost her bronze medal to American Jordan Chiles. After a score review, the result went into Chiles’ favour, elevating her spot from 5th to 3rd.
That said, a chunk of sports freaks and analysts didn’t take that remark in a positive way. Gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci was the one to raise her voice against the manhandling. But the controversy didn’t stick to Barbosu for long. The Romanian legend now threw another shade at the faulty review system, showing a clip of gymnast Sabrina Voinea’s recent performance.

Sabrina Voinea ended her Olympic set out in the 5th spot in the gymnastics finals. But the saddest part was the authority imposed a high penalty on the 17-year-old with deductions for stepping off the mat, restricting her from having a medal celebration. The gymnast revealed that she felt miserable at how pathetically the game authority treated her all along. Her mother also shared a video and photos on social media, which was seemingly enough to initiate a reverse decision. But everything went in vain. Now, a viral video clip on Twitter endorsed the same sentiment, showing the close footage of the specific controversial moment of the event. A minute observation can clearly elucidate that her heels probably didn’t even touch the match that should ideally nullify her ill-fate. Nadia Comaneci posted the shot, cranking up the dispute even more.

The new score review practice was supposed to bring more transparency to the table. But it reality it did exactly the opposite. Performers are constantly reduced to a lower score, and it negatively impacted their mental health. There are numerous instances of such cases emerging at the Olympics this year. As a stalwart of the sports world and a responsible citizen, Nadia Comaneci chose to come forward with the ongoing catastrophe.
The former Olympic champion wrote on X, “I can’t believe we play with athletes’ mental health and emotions like this… let’s protect them,”. It will be interesting to see if the event calls for further judgment protocols, shaping the careers of millions of budding athletes. With all of these developments embroiling the gymnastics world, there is still a bright light shining amidst it all, and that is the US of A, on top of the food chain.
