However, in recent news after the Halloween weekend, this trendsetter began trending once more, but not for the right reasons.

For Halloween 2023, Katelyn Ohashi and a friend of the star dressed up as former estranged Hollywood couple Amber Heard and Johnny Depp. Ohashi dressed up as Mera from DC?s ?Aquaman? and her friend as Captain Jack Sparrow from Disney?s ?Pirates of the Caribbean?.

What received major backlash was her caption in the pictures, which read, ?Rumor has it that Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were seen together.? In several other photos, she jokingly placed her hand around her partner?s throat in a ?choking? gesture and wrote in her caption, “nvm.” This sparked major outrage amongst fans and followers as the ?Depp v. Heard? case involved the sensitive issue of domestic abuse. Ohashi?s costume was criticized for being insensitive, and the subject of domestic abuse should not be taken lightly. In light of the situation, the former UCLA gymnast has now issued an apology.

In a recent post on X, the 26-year-old gymnast apologized for her actions, writing, ?I am truly sorry for the decision I made with my Halloween costume/post. It was insensitive and thoughtless. As someone who has experienced and spoken out against abuse, I understand how wrong it was and expect more of myself. I hope you can accept my apology. I will be better?.   • Heidi Klum, the queen of Halloween, received backlash in 2008 when she dressed up as the Hindu deity goddess Kali, and many found her choice in poor taste and considered it an offense to their deity.
  • Back in 2013, Julianne Hough, the American dancer and actress dressed as Crazy Eyes from the hit show ?Orange is the New Black?. However, to portray the character, who is a person of color, it was seen as putting on blackface, where white actors don black makeup to portray black stereotypes. This, too, received major backlash from the public.
