A very special reunion is about to take place while the world awaits the 2024 Summer Olympics. It is a matter of high honour for any gymnast/athlete in general to be graciously featured on the IOC list, prestige galore. A star-studded former athlete solidified her position globally for a coveted slot on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, and how.

Currently, some names are being made public that are joining the veteran athletes’ roster on the run for the major role. The line-up saw another piquant name being added in the recent development shared by the body governing gymnastics.

Gymnastics icon returns to Olympics venue

Unexpectedly, former German Olympic artistic gymnast Kim Bui declared her candidacy for the IOC Athletes’ Commission. The speculations were further confirmed in an official confirmation from FIG on Instagram, captioned, “The FIG is delighted to see former artistic gymnast and three-time Olympian Kim Bui 🇩🇪 on the list of candidates for the IOC Athletes’ Commission.”

The 3X Olympian and bronze medalist will join other 32 active athletes from around the world volunteering for the role. 34-year-old Bui said, “If the election is successful, I would like to work in particular for the physical and mental health of athletes worldwide and contribute my personal experience to this important topic.” Among the varied groups fighting for spots are 7X Olympic sprinter Allyson Felix from the US; Table Tennis player Funke Oshonaike of Nigeria, Yakov Toumarkin and Yazan al Bawwab. In addition, 7X golf major winner Inbee Park from South Korea and others permeate the diverse culture on the Olympics board.

Clarion calls about war hit athletes’ participation

A special viewpoint was proposed by Ukrainian judoka, Georgii Zantaraia in October when he questioned the neutral status given to some Russian athletes to stake their claim in Paris, during an international assembly of athletes held by the IOC. He suggested that athletes from Russia who disputed the waged war may very well participate as part of the Olympic refugee squad.

Around the news of new committee members requiring  four athletes from diverse sports, who if successful will pose an election to an eight-year term as representatives of the IOC by the Session. With that, it’s also interesting to note there are varied viewpoints considered by the committee. The Athletics Committee, in addition, is also including fresh and former faces in its component which allow more people to serve as global advocates.
