What comes to mind when we say <em>'Gymnastics'</em>? Many often consider it a singular discipline that includes several types of apparatus. That's what a majority of us are privy to, right? However, the sport is much more than what we've noticed at the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics, or any of the modern Summer Games before that. We know so much about some of our favorite gymnasts, but let's take a look at what the sport truly is.
<h2><strong>What is gymnastics? An introduction to the sport</strong></h2>
Every sport focuses on a certain attribute. However, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/sports/gymnastics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gymnastics</a> includes physical exercises that require flexibility, coordination, balance, artistry, agility, endurance, and strength. The outcome? A culmination of all of these elements across several apparatuses. At the Paris Olympics, we saw both men and women gymnasts perform across 4 or more events which was a thrilling show of skills. But what if we told you that when the sport emerged in ancient Greece for a completely different reason?

Ancient Greeks required these particular skills to perform at the circus and oddly enough, mount and dismount a horse. And that's how gymnastics was born. But before we move any further, let's take a look at what the term truly means. Derived from the common Greek adjective <em>'gymnos,' </em>it means to exercise naked. Why? The answer is far more simple than you'd expect. Athletes used to train in gymnasiums, you guessed it, completely unclothed.
<h2>History of the sport</h2>
However, the sport included a lot more than it does now. Running, weight lifting, swimming, and tumbling floor exercises were all initially considered to be an extension of gymnastics. That's what many witnessed during the ancient Olympic Games before they came to a screeching halt in 393 BCE. However, as we know, each of these eventually became a sport by itself. Only 2 events from the ancient world have made it into the modern events - a primitive form of vaulting and tumbling.

However after the Greek civilization dissolved, the Romans converted gymnastics into a formal sport. They viewed the activity as a way of increasing their efficiency, which would later help them whenever they went to war. A 15th-century depiction of modern vaulting shows three men jumping over a charging bull. Egypt also has several hieroglyphics showcasing individuals performing a variety of acrobatics moves. During the Han dynasty, many performers often practiced <em>juedixi</em>, a predecessor of the sport which included wrestling, tumbling, and dance.

Charles Beck introduced the sport as an educational program in Northampton Maine in 1825, and in Harvard a year later. However, in 1879, Yale was the first to have a team that competed in the sport. But collegiate gymnastics didn't come into the picture until 1897. The first meeting was held at the University of Chicago. On the other hand, women's gymnastics didn't develop until later. By 1982, women's college gymnastics was officially a part of the program. Since then, women have become a more prominent figure in the sport.
<h2><strong>What are the types of Gymnastics?</strong></h2>
The type of gymnastics that many are used to is called <em>Artistic Gymnastics. </em>It also happens to be the most popular type at the Olympics, consisting of 30-90-second routines. This is further divided into two categories. Men's gymnastics uses apparatuses and techniques that rely more on strength. The still rings, parallel bars, pommel horse, and high bars are some of the prominently featured events. However, WAG focuses on flexibility, strength, and form - heavily focusing on balance beams, floor exercises, and uneven bars.

<em>Rhythmic Gymnastics</em> is specifically a women-centric category only, it particularly showcases flexibility via graceful movements. The gymnasts use elements like ropes, hoops, ribbons, and balls. It is further categorized into team and individual events - incorporating elements like apparatus manipulation, ballet and dance to display hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and endurance.

A gymnast at the University of Iowa, George Nissen created a trampoline prototype in 1934. However, he didn't design the first modern trampoline until 1936. Since then trampoline training has always been a part of the gymnastics program. But in 1967, it was recognized as a sport in the U.S.  - <em>Trampoline Gymnastics (TRG)</em>. It involves fast-moving routines with somersaults, high-flying maneuvers, and twists. The event is divided into double-mini, individual, and synchronized events.

What happens when you combine certain elements of artistic gymnastics and TRG? You get <em>Power Tumbling</em>. With eight skills to display, it involves coordination, spatial awareness, and strength to make two passes on a 25-meter track. Lastly, we have <em>Acrobatic Gymnastics. </em>While many are enthralled by the artistic category, this is considered to be one of the most striking displays of skills in the sport. While no equipment is used, there are three types of acrobatic moves - dynamic routines, balanced routines, and a combined routine with both elements.
<h2><strong>Major rules and regulations of the sport</strong></h2>
While each type of sport has its own set of rules and scoring system, we will be focusing on artistic gymnastics here.

 	<li>When it comes to time constraints, this applies to only three events - Women's balance beam and floor exercises (men's and women's.) If they exceed the limit, the gymnasts are given a penalty of <strong>0.1</strong>.</li>
 	<li>Only one of the events includes music - the women's floor exercise. However, they are scored on composition, the music choice, and their approach to artistry.</li>
 	<li>If a female gymnast has participated in artistic gymnastics, she will not be eligible for rhythmic gymnastics.</li>
 	<li>When contesting at an international competition, the gymnasts must be on the same level for every event they enter.</li>
 	<li>For an athlete's competitive capacity levels, the coach will always be the one to make the final call.</li>

However, she only has 1 individual all-around gold to her name from her second Olympic berth. The gymnast has also contested in the 1970 and 1974 World Championships, the 1973 European Championships, and the first World Cup in 1975 - winning all five individual events.

Most known for her prowess on the balance beam and uneven bars, she walked into her second and last Olympics as the favorite in 1976. However, due to an injury, she could only muster up an individual silver medal on the beam and a team gold. Who bested her?
