What does Simone Biles' and Leanne Wong's fan request say about their impact on gymnastics?

Closet gymnasts, arise! The Olympic Village is the perfect place for the country’s athletes to get to know each other and build a sense of kinship for the big rumble ahead. Along with that, it can also be the place where hidden talents can be chanced upon as athletes get the time and opportunity to learn about what their national colleagues’ typical days look like. And now, after some mingling with the likes of Simone Biles and Leanne Wong, one USA star thinks his chances of representing the country in gymnastics shouldn’t be much of a debate.

Wong arrives at the French capital as a traveling alternate for the women’s gymnastics squad, while Biles looks at the City of Love to compensate for her run-in with the twisties from three years ago. Naturally, both gymnasts are filled with a sort of enthusiasm that’s proving to be infectious for their teammates as well.

In a recent Instagram story, Wong shared the claims made by the country’s celebrity fencer Miles Chamley-Watson. While the 34-year-old’s emphatic accolades at the 2016 Olympics and two World Championships have sealed his legacy as one of the USA’s most beloved fencing sensations, Miles thinks he can just as easily make it to the gymnastics contingent as well.

In Miles’ original IG story, the fencer can be seen doing an impressive handstand. Chamley’s confidence about his skills also looks to be through the roof as he tags Biles and Wong in his story to write, “I’m ready to join the team. I told yall man’s an athlete. I’m ready t join @usagym,” as he puts forth his candidature to represent the gymnastics camp in the upcoming weeks.

The foil fencer was the first USA star to win an individual gold medal at the 2013 World Championships and was named as part of the national team earlier this year. While his quest for the maiden Olympic gold still continues, Miles thinks his career option in other domains shouldn’t be entirely out of the question either. However, while he ponders his chances as a gymnast, the representatives of USA Gymnastics on the grand stage have a lot on their plates already.

A tough task at hand for Simone Biles & Co.

Simone Biles has racked up some pretty incredible scores leading up to the 2024 Olympic Games. From the Coe Hydration Classic and the Xfinity US Championships to the US Olympic Team Trials, Biles has consistently come out on top of the score sheets with her thrilling all-around performances. Her momentum-gaining spree was flagged off last year when she won both the US Classic and the World Championships All-Around gold after a hiatus of almost three years. While the misfortune that befell her in Tokyo at the last Games still continues to cast dark clouds over the possibility of Simone experiencing something similar at the French capital as well, the 27-year-old determination to reclaim her high throne remains one of the cornerstones for the USA’s golden hope for this year’s biggest sporting tournament.

On the other hand, Leanne Wong finished seventh at the Team Trials with a score of 110.425 and earned her spot as a traveling alternate with Hezly Rivera and Joscelyn Roberson. Although she might not end up watching Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and the defending Olympic AA gold medalist Suni Lee from the sidelines, this could be a brilliant learning opportunity for the Florida Gators star.
