NIL has probably been in the most talked about subjects involving collegiate athletics. The NCAA regulation reversal provides college athletes the right to profit from their personal brand and endorsements during their college years. While the decision evoked a positive response and incurred an immediate constructive note, there might also be a downside to it. Yul Moldauer, the 2017 World bronze medalist, points out the reason for the latter stance.

Having graduated in 2019 from Oklahoma Sooners, the 2017 floor champion did not get the experience of NIL. The factor, nonetheless, hasn’t stopped the champion from giving the regulation a thought. Which, he revealed during an Essentiallysports exclusive chat with Kenny Ducey.

For the newest EssentiallySports’ FanCast episode, Kenny Ducey spoke to Yul Moldauer on everything gymnastics to his interests beyond. In one of the segments, Yul was asked if he had ‘any thoughts, positive or negative about NIL which has taken the college sports by a storm off late’. “It’s so hard to talk about because I can see the good side but also see the bad side. So I am an almost middle person,” he started. He stated that he would have loved to have NIL deals, but he can’t help but see its potential of decreasing competitiveness.

“It sucks that it’s changing how sports work in college, now it’s not about what team do you want to represent, what culture do you want to give in to and live by…now it’s like what school can offer the best money, And I think ..in 5 years you know we’ll see the huge decline of competitiveness,” his further stance reads.

Yul further spoke about his decision to choose Oklahoma because of what it had to offer and how it would help him transition into a professional setting. However, he is now perturbed that athletes are choosing schools because of the money and losing sight of the ‘why they first started the sport’.

For Yul, who traveled from Seoul to farms and the stages of the Swiss Cup, gymnastics has been an integral part. Having witnessed an uncertain path in men’s gymnastics, the gymnast holds higher aspirations for the direction forward for his glittering sport.

US women’s gymnastics has attained unprecedented heights. But the same cannot be said for men. Yul, in a chat with Kenny Ducey, mentions exactly that. The crowd, the cheers, and recognition, all and more infuses a good sense, he reveals.
