Years after her retirement from competitive gymnastics, Skinner and her husband, Jonas Harmer, are now expecting a child in 2023. The interview took an unexpected turn when Skinner was asked to revisit the dramatic events of 2021. During the Tokyo Olympics, she faced the heart-wrenching reality of not qualifying for floor and vault. She said, “During prelims, I ended up not qualifying into floor and vault which are my two best events that I was hoping to, you know, make to hopefully get a medal on one of those two events.”

Skinner recalled, “Oh my gosh I can’t believe this is happening, and I was so distraught in the moment and you know I went back to my room and I just cried, I cried, and I cried, and I cried. And I was just like why does it have to end this way.” Little did she know, fate had a different plan.
How Simone Biles changed Skinner’s fate
Biles, battling the “twisties” at the Tokyo Olympics, realized that MyKayla Skinner was the one to step in for her in the vault. With a text message to Skinner and a change of flight plans, the stage was set for an unforgettable Olympic comeback.

Skinner recounted those moments, saying, “Simone just had texted me that night after team finals and was like, ‘MyKayla, there’s no one else I’d rather go in for Vault for me than you.'”
In the vault final, Skinner gave it her all, landing a Cheng and an Amanar, securing a silver medal for herself and her country, the USA. It was a silver lining to a story that at first seemed hopeless.
