In an unexpected turn of events, 23-year-old Team GB gymnast Ellie Downie retired from the vaults. Announcing the news on the latest Stompcast episode of Dr. Alex Gergo, the young gymnast has shocked everyone. As views of differing degrees pour in, Downie holds no regret. Sharing her vote of thanks earlier on Instagram, the elite-level gymnast put up an emotional post.

As Downie departs from professional gymnastics, wishes from the athletic community poured in numbers. Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and others showered their love on the young gymnast and congratulated her for her remarkable career.

Prioritizing her mental health and happiness, Downie took the call that she described as a “difficult decision.” Even though she cut short her career, she is proud of all her achievements. Stepping forward to praise her, American gymnast Jade Carey wrote, “congratulations on an incredible gymnastics career ❤️.” As the day progressed, her comment section flooded with support and wishes. 

Joining others, Jordan Chiles, the American gymnast, too, shared her heart. Sending prayers, she wrote, “So beyond proud of you!! Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you💛.” Olympic silver medalist Grace Mccallum also dropped her thoughts in the comment section. In a sweet gesture, Grace wrote, “Congratulations on all your accomplishments. You are amazing❤️.”

In the podcast Downie with Dr. Alex Gergo, Ellie reflected on her struggles. She extensively explained how the allegations against the sport’s authority negatively affected her career. After battling through depression, the decision thus comes as a conscious choice. Even though gymnastics gave her “joy,” sometimes taking a tough call is perhaps for the best. “A legend of the sport,” Rhys McClenghan remarked. Needless to say, Downie’s life has indeed been an inspiration.

Love and prayers for the young gymnast 

As the comment section of Ellie’s post flooded, good friend Giarrni wished her the best in her future endeavors. Wishing success, Giarrni wrote, “Happy retirement Ellie! Hope you have a wonderful and successful future ❤️.” Fellow teammate Kelly Simm also congratulated Downie for her achievements and said, “Congrats on everything you’ve achieved, el 👏 So grateful for all the experiences and memories I’ve got to share with you ❤️.”

Downie was just 16 years old when she rose to public fame with the aid of her sister. Over the years, the 12-time senior medalist has successfully established her authority in gymnastics. However, with her past experiences, she now fails to connect with the sport like she used to do earlier. Thus, having retired, she feels more relieved. She can now live a happy life focusing on her mental health.
