The opening night of the 2024 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth was a dazzling showcase of talent from the Senior Women. American gymnasts lit up Dickies Arena with their incredible routines, all vying for the national champion title and crucial points to qualify for the Olympic Trials. Big names like Simone Biles, Kayla DiCello, Skye Blakely, and Suni Lee wowed the crowd, highlighting the exciting road to Paris 2024.

Yet, amidst all the brilliance, Trinity Thomas, a gymnast with a storied career and high expectations, faced some unexpected challenges on night one. She suffered an ankle injury while opening the evening’s competition on the floor exercise. She placed her hands down on her opening full-twisting double layout and couldn’t land the double layout at the end of her routine. Staying on her knees, she could not complete the routine, only missing the final pose, and walked off on her own. As a result, she had to withdraw from the remaining events that night.

But as the final day of women’s competition at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships—the Senior Women’s Day 2 continued—so did Trinity’s woes. On the second day of the Senior Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) competition, Trinity Thomas made the difficult decision to scratch from the remainder of the meet. This decision came after she scored a 13.550 on the uneven bars, a performance that fell short of her usual standards.

The first rotation standings of Day 2 were as follows:
1. Simone Biles – 75.250
2. Kayla DiCello – 70.800
3. Skye Blakely – 70.800

As we reflect on this upsetting setback, let us see how the 2024 elite season has been so far for the 23-year-old 2022 NCAA All-Around Champion.

The 2024 gymnastics journey of Trinity Thomas

Last July, Trinity Thomas announced her return to elite gymnastics with the goal of making it to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, stating, “It’s one more year of gymnastics.” Seven months later, at February’s Winter Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, Thomas made a remarkable comeback to the elite stage after a hiatus since 2019. Despite injuring a toe just days before her return, the University of Florida star displayed exceptional form, securing a fourth-place finish in the all-around.

However, after being selected for the National Camp, Thomas withdrew from the 2024 Pacific Rim Championships in April to prioritize her health and well-being. Undeterred, she showcased her skills at the Core Hydration Classic in the XL Center, where she impressed with a third-place finish on the uneven bars, tying with Jordan Chiles with a score of 14.30 and competed on three events—vault, bars, and beam.
