We’ve all had one of those nightmares, where it feels nearly impossible to wake up from. That’s probably what the past 12 days have felt like for Jordan Chiles. During the women’s floor exercise finals at the Bercy Arena, the 23-year-old got a fairytale ending to her Paris Olympics experience. How? She won her first individual Olympic medal, sharing the podium with Rebeca Andrade and Simone Biles. Sounds like the perfect ending to a thrilling gymnastics leg at the Summer Games, right?
Much to her dismay, she would only be able to hold on to her bronze for 5 days. Romania’s Ana Barbosu would have received the medal if it wasn’t for an appeal by Cecile Landi. Even though the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) was now looking into the incident, Chiles had to deal with several fans criticizing her on social media. While her compatriots rallied behind her to show their support, former U.S. gymnast Aly Raisman has come forward with some words of encouragement.

It has now been 12 days since the gymnast stood on the third step of the podium, filled with pride and joy. However, no one could’ve guessed what would come after. Raisman shared a snippet from the Today Show on an Instagram story, relaying how harrowed she was upon witnessing it in real-time. “As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I’m just so devastated for Jordan. This is so unfair, and um I really can’t even imagine and truly believe what she’s going through.” She couldn’t hide her disbelief over how heartbreaking the situation was for the 23-year-old.
The former gymnast continued, “This completely goes against the integrity of the sport, the integrity of the Olympics. This isn’t what the Olympic Games is supposed to be about.” Having been in a similar situation before, Raisman is perplexed as to how something like this could have happened on the world’s biggest stage. “So, I am so disappointed, and just so devasted for Jordan and I obviously support her fully.” Imagine working extremely hard for this one moment, only to have it snatched away from you merely days later.

No one can deny how essential the podium moment was with Biles, Chiles, and Andrade. The 30-year-old happens to be a fan of it too. “I feel awful because it was such an incredible Olympic Games and to be able to watch Jordan on that podium with Rebeca and Simone is one of those iconic moments in sports in my opinion and that will live on forever.” Fans have even posted several videos of the American gymnasts moments before bowing down to the Brazilian. Iconic doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Jordan Chiles’ time at the French capital initially ended on a high. But it now has been tainted by the controversy that followed. “And so I am just so gutted that this is the end of her Olympic experience. It’s just not okay. But I want answers and Jordan deserves to have answers too,” Raisman stated. This has seemingly concluded with Ana Barbosu receiving the bronze medal on August 16. However, it isn’t a happy ending for everyone involved.
She will always be ‘That’ girl for her squad
No matter how low Jordan Chiles feels, this experience has brought her closer to her girl squad. While she found herself in the eye of the storm, Suni Lee let her know she had her back. She shared USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s official statement to her Instagram story. “i got your back forever Jo💛 u have all my flowers and you will ALWAYS be an olympic champion💐” Hezly Rivera extended her support for the 23-year-old on an Instagram story too. She kept it simple with, “love you @jordanchiles and will always support you!!!”
