Can Simone Biles and Suni Lee dominate the Paris Olympics despite their recent setbacks?

Who would have thought that even on her comeback to the grand stage, Simone Biles would trample through all competition? If the meets leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics weren’t enough to show her true mettle, the 27-year-old has just made it clear in the French capital that she has come for it all.

A post by Know the Unknown on X just minutes ago shared Biles’ latest feat emphatically. #SimoneBiles leads in #Gymnastics qualifiers at #paris2024olympics, reads the caption of the post, as Team USA scooped the winning spot after the Subdivision 2 qualifiers. With an All-Around score of 59.566, after four rotations, Simone will progress to the AA finals at the Paris Games.

Biles will be joined by the reigning Olympic All-Around champ, Suni Lee, who posted a score of 56.132 after her four routines. Lee will progress to the finals thanks to her incredible 14.866 and 14.033 scores on the bars and balance beam, respectively.

Simone Biles took the scores in the vault, while Suni Lee scored the third-highest points in the UB routine (highest among the USA’s gymnasts). On the other hand, Biles was again the highest American point-earner in the BB and the floor exercise (second in the overall BB scoreboard). In her first vault, Biles set the bars fashionably high as she executed the coveted Yurchenko Double Pike (Biles II) with graceful poise, sending a sound message to her opponents about her intentions for this year’s Games.

With 14.433 points, Oregon Beavers star Jade Carey scooped the second spot in the vault and progressed to the finals of the event along with Simone. However, the reigning Olympic floor champ took a tumble during her floor performance this year and failed to qualify for the finals. However, the stakes are probably the highest for the floor exercise, as Biles’ top spot is closely followed by her bestie, Jordan Chiles. The UCLA Bruins gymnast earned a score of 13.866 to qualify for the floor finals and could well earn a place on the podium along with Simone if she can dish out similar performances as she did just hours ago.

With all four of the country’s representatives doing their best to help the USA earn a total of 172.296 and lead the scoreboard, it remains to be seen how many medals they can bring back from the City of Love. The USA had to settle for a team silver in Tokyo three years ago, a large reason for which was Simone Biles pulling out of the final due to her mental troubles. However, so far, she looks to be in full control this time around and could be the one to lead her team to redemption, with her teammates blazing their guns as well.
