In an exclusive interview with People, Jordan Chiles discussed her journey to overcoming an unhealthy relationship with food. Chiles spoke about how a former coach shamed her into thinking she needed to restrict her calorie intake to be successful in gymnastics. She said, “I was shamed into thinking I wasn’t fit enough and that I should just consume clear-based soups.”

Her coach encouraged her to eat only 800 calories a day, which led to an unhealthy relationship with food. The gymnastics phenom shared that leaving the toxic coaching environment of her previous coach allowed her to repair her relationship with food. She realized that her body needed fuel to perform the demanding physical activities required in gymnastics.

Chiles emphasized the rigorous training regimen of athletes of her caliber, who devote nearly 34 hours a week to honing their skills. Despite her rigorous routines, she has focused on clean eating and come to a healthy point in her life where Jordan Chiles says, “But if I want pizza, I eat pizza.” With this newfound positive mindset towards food, let us see how Chiles is paving her path to the Olympics again.
