At the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics All-Around Final at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, history has been made. Just a few days prior, we witnessed a breathtaking display of talent during the team finals, where Japan clinched the World Title with an impressive score of 255.594. They were closely trailed by the People’s Republic of China, securing silver with a score of 253.794, while the United States proudly secured the bronze with a score of 252.428. It was a momentous occasion, and the anticipation for the All-Around Final at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium, was palpable.
Merely days before this triumph, the USA gymnastics men’s team had achieved a remarkable feat by winning their first team medal at the Olympics since 2014, thereby ending a podium drought that had persisted since the years between 1984 and 2001. Now, in a twist of fate and after a decade-long wait since 2010, Fred Richard has not only broken but shattered the American Curse at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Hashimoto Daiki of Japan exhibited his dominance once again, securing the gold medal and claiming back-to-back All-Around titles. Illia Kovtun added to the excitement by winning the second All-Around medal of his career after earning a bronze in 2021. However, the star of the moment was undeniably Fred Richard from the United States, who not only put an end to a decade-long curse since 2010 when Jon Horton won bronze in the All-Around category, but also wrote his name in history.
Richard’s power-packed gymnastics performance during the night
Fred Richard’s journey to the bronze medal was nothing short of spectacular. He demonstrated remarkable skill and composure, scoring a commendable 14.633 (1) on floor exercise, a solid 13.733 (5) on pommel horse, and a respectable 13.500 (7) on rings. His performance on the vault was exceptional, earning him a score of 14.566 (3), while his display on parallel bars showcased his talent with a score of 14.600 (7).
However, the high bar, where he faced a fall on the Kolman, presented a moment of challenge. The very same high bar that he had soared on during the team finals became his Achilles’ heel at the All-Around event. Nonetheless, Richard’s remarkable journey had a triumphant ending as he clinched the bronze medal. His performance not only marked the USA’s fourth All-Around medal in history but also made him the youngest individual world medalist in US history.
