Team USA's therapy dog is a true hero—how much do animals mean to athletes' mental health?

Team USA’s therapy dog Beacon became a star in his own right during the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in June. But, Beacon’s handler Tracey Callahan Molnar left fans heartbroken after announcing his sudden illness on September 5. However, now that Team USA’s special member is on the road to recovery, Molnar has once again started posting on Beacon’s Instagram page.

“Who cares that this is two days late for National Gymnastics Day? Not me.” Molnar wrote on the latest post. However, Molnar probably couldn’t make the post as it’s been just days since the therapy dog started his recovery from the mysterious symptoms. Naturally, fans of the puppy who helped the likes of Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, and others calm during the competition, felt delighted.

“Such a beautiful soul,” commented one after watching Beacon’s montage with gymnasts of all ages. Besides being grateful to such loyal Instagram followers, Molnar recounted her 16-month journey with USA Gymnastics. “Beacon and I have received so many thank yous over the last 16 months when we started providing pet therapy for @usagym,” said the dog’s ‘Main Human.’

The handler felt proud that she and her puppy could provide the Olympic gold medalists with “calm before, during, and after competitions.” Although the Team USA’s therapy dog didn’t travel to Paris, he ensured the nation’s best gymnasts wouldn’t falter under the stress of the Olympic Trials. So the former gymnast and coach took the opportunity to thank the entire community.

While she and her puppy assist gymnasts, the community, including competitive gymnasts, provided her with a sense of peace during Beacon’s illness. The former coach felt helpless when nothing worked to relieve Beacon’s stiffness, fever, and labored breathing on that fateful day in early September. However, the gymnastics community sprung into action.

The moment they learned of Beacon’s illness, everyone in the gymnastics community came together to raise money for Beacon’s treatment. “Please donate if you feel…” wrote Simone Biles’ sister-in-law, Sammi Biles, while sharing the dig’s GoFundMe page. The campaign ended up earning $31,148 for the dog’s treatment. However, the therapy dog is not back to 100% yet.

The gymnastics community is keen to learn about Beacon’s health

“Love Beacon!!” exclaimed one fan after learning that Team USA Gymnastics’ four-legged star was out of danger. However, Molnar also wrote that the puppy isn’t fit to get back to helping the gymnasts just yet. That’s why many wished to learn more about the therapy dog’s health. “Hoping Beacon is feeling even better!! Such a special pup!” wished one fan.

While the individual of right hope, Beacon is still in recovery. In her September 5 announcement, the former gymnast had explained that doctors found fluid in the dog’s chest cavity. This became a big reason why Molnar had to admit the golden retriever to the hospital. While symptoms subsided, the fluid flow became an issue even when they discharged Beacon.

While posting about Team USA Gymnastics’ four-legged therapist, his handler explained that she would have to drain “excess fluid from Beacon’s chest cavity” regularly. So a netizen asked how much progress Beacon had made. “Is he doing okay? Sweet boy,” commented the Instagram follower. “I think he’s making progress! Thank you!” Molnar replied to the concerned fan.

“His appetite, energy, and feistiness are returning, which is great to see. We are waiting on more results from the test to get a more complete picture of what we are dealing with,” the former gymnastics coach revealed in the comment. So it would seem that despite making progress, Beacon isn’t out of the woods yet. Thankfully, the therapy dog continues to improve, and we can rest assured that Tracey Callahan Molnar will keep Beacon’s loyal fan base updated with all the details.
