Albert Azaryan, who represented Armenia and the Soviet Union, passed away recently. He was one of those gymnasts who popularized the sport in the 1950s and 1960s. He passed away at the age of 94, and the news has been confirmed by the authorities of Armenia. He was one of the most decorated gymnasts of all time, having won four Olympic medals and a number of world championship titles.

He was affectionately known as “The Lord of the Rings” for his sheer dominance in gymnastics. He excelled in the gymnastics arena, becoming renowned for his iconic “Azaryan cross” maneuver. This challenging move involves extending the arms straight while hanging, showcasing his exceptional skill. Now, the Olympian has passed away, leaving behind a huge gymnastics legacy to follow.

As per a report in Massis Post, the news of his demise was confirmed by the President of the Gymnastics Federation of Armenia, Gagik Vanoyan. Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, extended his condolences after Azaryan’s demise on Tuesday. He stated, “Azaryan’s contribution is invaluable not only at the Armenian, but also at the world level of sports. Achievements that are unique in the history of gymnastics, including the set of exercises he performed on the rings, officially named the Azaryan Cross.” He also emphasized that Azaryan was a legend who was an inspiration and a mentor for other gymnasts.

The Armenian Prime Minister added that Azaryan was among those athletes who elevated Armenian sports to new heights of success, and his contributions to the growth of gymnastics in Armenia are unmatched. Azaryan was a three-time Olympic gold medalist, winning two in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and one in the 1960 Rome Olympics in the rings category. Additionally, he secured a silver medal in Rome while competing in the team competition. Azaryan also boasts numerous world championship titles in his remarkable career.

His career and major achievements

Azaryan achieved the remarkable feat of becoming a four-time world champion. He won the Rings event twice, in 1954 and 1958, respectively, and was also part of the Armenian team that clinched the team competition title in those same years. Additionally, he secured a silver medal in horizontal bars at the 1958 world championships. Notably, Azaryan was the first gymnast to stand atop the Olympic podium twice. His contributions were recognized in 2004 when the Armenian government honored him by having him carry the nation’s flag during the opening ceremony at the Athens Olympics, marking 44 years since his last Olympic appearance.
