Is Cecile Landi right to defend Jordan Chiles, or is the Romanian legend's critique justified?

When the final score was announced in the women’s floor exercise final on Monday, Ana Barbosu of Romania leaped onto the floor with her country’s flag, convinced she had clinched a podium finish. Meanwhile, Jordan Chiles was left feeling deflated, fearing she had narrowly missed out. However, the drama took an unexpected turn when Chiles’s coach, Cecile Landi, filed an inquiry about her score.

This crucial intervention altered the results, raising Jordan Chiles’s score from 13.666 to 13.766 and nudging her past Barbosu’s 13.700 mark. The change catapulted Chiles from fifth to third place, securing a stunning bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yet, the controversy didn’t end there!

Romania’s Ana Barbosu, who was also tied score with her fellow countrywoman Sabrina Voinea could have been a bronze medalist. But she also faced a setback. Sabrina Voinea secured fifth place in the gymnastics floor finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a score of 13.7 points (Voinea received a 0.100 point deduction), but she felt unfairly treated due to deductions for allegedly stepping off the mat—an incident that video evidence disproved.

Voinea believed she deserved a higher score and appealed the decision, arguing that the penalty was unjust. Despite her efforts, the result remained unchanged, leaving her to contend with the frustration of missing out on a potential medal. So, now it seems Romanian legend will be challenging Cecile Landi.

Andrei Nourescu, Euronews Romania’s special correspondent at the 2024 Olympics, reports that Nadia Comaneci – is regarded as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time and was awarded the first perfect 10 in gymnastics history at the 1976 Summer Games. She closely examined footage of Sabrina Voinea’s floor exercise, focusing on a heel that extended beyond the official competition area.

Comaneci’s scrutiny led her to forward the images to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), President Morinari Watanabe, and the judging panel. But what was their response?

After Jordan Chiles secured Bronze, Romanian Olympic Committee appeals FIG over Sabrina Voinea Maneca’s floor exercise score

Mihai Covaliu, president of the Romanian Olympic Committee, has formally protested to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) regarding a controversial decision on Sabrina Voinea Maneca’s floor exercise score. In a letter addressed to FIG President Morinari Watanabe, Covaliu requested a re-evaluation of Voinea Maneca’s performance and scoring from the floor final held on August 5, 2024. The Romanian committee argues that the assessment process and the lack of transparency in the appeal decision have negatively impacted both the athlete and the sport’s reputation.

The Romanian Olympic Committee’s appeal highlights the serious concerns about the fairness of the scoring and its impact on Voinea Maneca’s mental health. The committee stresses that the decision’s media coverage and Voinea Maneca’s subsequent public statements about quitting gymnastics shows the need for a thorough re-evaluation. If the FIG grants the appeal and adjusts the score, Voinea Maneca could potentially reclaim a higher score, possibly affecting the current bronze medal standing of another competitor, Jordan Chiles. But this has also become the county affair issue. Looking at the tension it seems Chile’s medal is at risk. what are your thoughts on it?
