Having one Olympian in the family is reason enough to boast. The prospect of having two is only better! While Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo might not have the best relationship with his mother right now, Angelica Yulo undoubtedly feels pride in the historic feat her eldest achieved in Paris earlier this year. And now she might have a chance to beam even more broadly four years later.
After Yulo brought his country its first Olympic gold in gymnastics, the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) is doubling its efforts in hopes of retaining the momentum for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. With that in mind, the country’s gymnastics apex body doesn’t have to look further than its champion star right now.
A Facebook post by KG Management Inc. from October 21 reveals that Carlos’ younger brother Eldrew is on the radar for the GAP to represent the country at the next quadrennial event. According to the update, the Olympian’s younger siblings are training with the same coach who helped Carlos achieve his seminal milestone in the City of Love. “The Philippine gymnastics athletes, Eldrew and Elaiza Yulo are currently training in Japan under Coach Munehiro Kugimiya,” reads the caption of the post.

“With Coach Kugimiya being their elder brother’s former long-time coach, it seems like fate that they would be trained by the same person who has contributed in shaping the recognition of gymnastics in the Philippines,” the social media update elaborates further. With that, the long-time dream of GAP President Cynthia Carrion might be about to become a reality. Carrion has had a massive impact on Carlos’ life and the gymnast often cites her as his second mother.
“I hope the two of them can be at ease and train with no worries here,” reportedly said about the rising Yulo family stars who he will be working with. But Carlos has previously stated the journey will be rewarding but difficult. “It is hard to prepare and the process will take some time, just like what I went through,” the two-time Olympic gold medalist cautions his younger brother. But Carrion seems to have the same faith in Eldrew she has in Carlos and thinks training with the best coach out there could really make gymnastics in the Philippines a more dominant sport.

More stars could join Carlos Yulo for LA28
Talking about the LA28, Cynthia was recently heard saying, “I’m going to have a team, not only Carlos Yulo. I want the whole team, Philippine team,” as per an article by GMA from last month. In an interview with Radyo Pilipinas 2, Carrion further said, this time, it will be a whole Filipino contingent for the grandest sporting event in the world instead of sending only a couple of individual athletes. If the plans pan out correctly, then Carlos and Eldrew will be the first siblings from the Asian nation to participate in the same Olympic Games.
Along with the Yulo brothers, Carrion is also thinking of getting British gymnast Jake Jarman to compete for the GAP at the next Olympics. Jarman’s mother traces her roots to Cebu, Philippines, and the GAP boss believes Brit could help to make gymnastics bigger and better in the island nation as well. “We have prepared [letters], I have to talk to his mother if she agrees and Jake, himself, if he agrees,” Cynthia said. So do you think the lineup could take on the best from around the world and take Carlos Yulo’s achievement further? Drop in with a comment to let us know!
