Olivia Dunne's brutal training—Is it worth the sacrifice for her final year at LSU?

Olivia Dunne has officially entered her fifth year with the LSU Tigers. In the last few days, she mingled with Haleigh Bryant and others during the official ring ceremony in Baton Rouge. The electrifying ceremony was framed with all smiles. After all, it is going to be her last year in the gymnastics camp. That status might lead her to focus more on the bond she has made in the camp since 2021. According to her, these bonds have made her tenure memorable at the Tigers’ den.

In a recent interaction with Flau’jae Johnson, the 21-year-old revealed her thoughts on the bonds she formed during camp. Nonetheless, Dunne described her college experience as bittersweet, grappling with mixed emotions. But why did she feel this way?

In the podcast, Best of Both Worlds with Flau’jae, both Olivia Dunne and Johnson shared their experiences at LSU. On several points, they agreed and those were the process of bond-making in the club and the unique culture they faced. The basketball player firmly advocated for the right mindset to adapt to college training, leading Livvy to describe the process as ‘brutal but in the best way.’ She felt this intensity during her off-season in Pittsburgh as well. However, the remedy for such a demanding training regime lies in the bonds she forged with her gymnastics teammates in Baton Rouge. Flau’jae nodded in agreement.

In fact, the 20-year-old college basketball player revealed her coach Kim Mulkey’s name, whose stare had made her and her teammates gel together well. Furthermore, she also explained the extra run she had made or the extra effort she had put in. All these have come into being, strengthening the bond she practices with other members of the LSU women’s basketball team.  Olivia has had the same level of involvement but in her gymnastics squad. Therefore, that common feeling made her concede, “This makes it more special when you’re doing it for something bigger than yourself it just and it makes everyone closer for sure.” But this feeling has a negative aspect—it can make the tender heart bleed more, as it has done to Livvy Dunne.

The disruption in the program during the COVID year has made Olivia Dunne eligible for fifth-year. However, she had an option to go with the suggestion beforehand. But the New Jersey native did not look beyond LSU Gymnastics, while several of her colleagues had already left the fold. Now, when the season is about to roll in full motion, Livvy has an epiphany.

Now standing in her last year in Baton Rouge, Dunne knows that from now on, every second of tenure counts as it will not come back to her again. That mood was recently reflected when she shared a snippet of her gym session at LSU. While the background music, “Forever Young” set the tone of the post, Olivia did the rest by keeping the caption, “last year in this place.” That explains the emotional rundown the national champion feels regarding savoring the moment. Her fans also feel the same. It is just an affair of a few months more before she completes her one last dance. Till then, this emotional quotient will remain high.
