Jordan Chiles stepping up—Is she the new face of USA Gymnastics in the post-Biles era?

For gymnastics fans of the country, a rollercoaster ride is en route. After three long years, the Gold Over America Tour is about to begin its journey from Oceanside today, and the prospect of watching some of the country’s biggest gymnasts in action is making connoisseurs excited. However, amidst all the bling, one hiccup remains, and Jordan Chiles is at the center of it.

The UCLA star didn’t have a great time in Paris last month. Despite winning gold with her teammates at the 2024 Olympics, Jordan’s individual bronze was stripped away five days after she won the same in the women’s Floor Exercise final. However, the decision was challenged by all the stakeholders in the USA, but it looks like Chiles wants to take the matter into her own hands.

A post by Gymnastics Now on X from September 16 reveals that the 23-year-old is leading the legal battle against the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sports) and the FIG’s (International Gymnastics Federation) directive. “Jordan Chiles has officially submitted an appeal to the Swiss Federal Supreme Court in regard to the CAS decision that stripped her of her bronze medal,” reads the caption of the post. However, even though Chiles is going to spearhead the charge, she won’t be left without any help.

The USAG and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee also filed a letter in Chiles’ support. “USA Gymnastics supports the appeal submitted today by Jordan Chiles at the Swiss Federal Tribunal,” states the country’s apex gymnastics body. The USAG’s statement goes on to note that it was a “collective, strategic decision to have Jordan lead the initial filing,” as it mentions that close coordination with Chiles’ legal team is being ensured every step of the way.

CAS violated Chiles’s fundamental “right to be heard” by refusing to consider the video evidence that showed her inquiry was submitted on time,” claims the two-time Olympian. However, she will have more to handle than just keeping up with the proceedings in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Following the CAS’ directive to Chiles demanding she hand over her hardware to Romania’s Ana Barbosu, many people stepped forward to stand beside the former claiming the decision to be unfair to the Bruins star. The CAS and the FIG stated that Chiles and her coach Cecile Landi’s inquiry was raised beyond the specified one-minute mark, and hence the adjusted score was inaccurate. But the US Democrat representative Stephen Cohen, along with many others, smelled foul and personally reached out to the CAS urging them to reverse its decision and allow Jordan to retain her Olympic medal. “2 issues at conflict here: the judges’ failure to score correctly & an alleged 4-second delay on appealing the score,” Cohen made his confusion clear.

While the case is yet to be concluded, Chiles will need to put her misery aside and hit the road as the Gold Over America Tour looks to bring more exposure to the sport. Which gymnast are you most looking forward to as the event returns after 2021? Drop by with a comment below!
