Simone Biles' gift to Jordan Chiles—Is this the ultimate display of friendship in sports?

Despite earning her first individual Olympic medal, Jordan Chiles is the target of a massive controversy. Coach Cecile Landi’s inquiry led to Chiles replacing Romania’s Ana Barbosu as the floor exercise bronze medalist in Paris. However, outrage and a CAS verdict snatched that achievement away from her. Yet, for Team USA and her teammate Simone Biles, Chiles is “Forever THAT GIRL.”

When Jordan Chiles returned to social media after winning a gold and bronze medal in Paris, she was met with anger. Many fans who saw Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Voinea as more deserving didn’t hesitate to abuse Chiles racially. The trauma, coupled with the CAS verdict, drove the 23-year-old off all social media platforms. However, that hasn’t stopped Biles from reaching out.

Besides FaceTiming and texting her WCC teammate, the 7x Olympic gold medalist has sent “little things” to bring a smile to her best friend’s face. “One of them was these four or five girls guarding a medal, and I thought that was the cutes,” Simone Biles told PEOPLE. The post resonated with the 27-year-old because it symbolized the bond in their team.

Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera have supported their grieving teammate throughout this ordeal. “And then I sent her Flavor Flav’s bronze [medal he made for her] and then I sent her LeBron [James]’s tweet,” added the 11x Olympic medalist. Hip-hop star Flavor Flav was present in Paris as the sponsor of the U.S. women’s water polo team but cheered for every Olympian.

Like Snoop Dogg gifted athletes such as Tara Davis-Woodhall with a Death Row necklace, Flav had something special for Chiles. After CAS’ verdict, the rapper made a custom bronze clock necklace for Chiles. “USA gonna Fight the Powers that be,” wrote the rapper. Simone Biles also sent a post about Chiles to an NBA legend and Team USA flag-bearer, Lebron James.

The Paris 2024 gold medalist shared the original Team USA post that addressed Jordan Chiles as “that girl.” While Biles’ gift may not match Flavor Flav’s grand gesture, her consistency stands out. Biles has stayed with her best friend through thick and thin; unfortunately, that’s all she can do now.

What’s next for Simone Biles’ best friend?

Have an interesting take?

While Jordan Chiles has the support of loved ones, teammates, fans, and even the USAG, her future remains murky. The U.S. lawmakers fighting for the 23-year-old gymnast present newly discovered evidence after the CAS hearing. However, the IOC and CAS rejected their appeal to reopen that case. Things didn’t change even when CAS panel head Dr. Hamid G. Gharavi’s possible bias came to light.

Gharavi has represented Romain in the international court of law for over a decade. While Chiles is part of the Gold Over America Tour, which kicks off on October 16, she has gone radio silent on social media. While Chiles has made no posts, her Instagram captures the entrance of the World Champions Center, indicating that she’s training again. USAG hasn’t stopped fighting, either.

In keeping with Flavor Flav’s words, the USAG and NOC are indeed fighting the powers that be. After hitting a dead end with the CAS and IOC, the U.S. takes the case to the Swiss Federal Tribunal. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that the Tribunal will reopen the case. However, no matter the outcome, Jordan Chiles will always have Simone Biles’ support.
