After Biles' emotional farewell, who will rise to be the next gymnastics icon?

A new chapter beckons Simone Biles’ trusty ally. Cecile Landi has been in the gymnast’s corner during some of the biggest and most memorable days of Simone’s career. And now, as the next step of her career waits to be taken, it looks like the celebrity coach is ready to take on the challenge with gusto.

Only yesterday, Landi noted how Biles extended her support and encouraged the former to take up the job of co-head coach for the Georgia Gymdogs. With the news being confirmed, Landi has also brushed off the initial skepticism that was a pestering thought in the back of her head. In her Instagram story, Cecile shared her jubilation of embarking on a new season with a glimmer in her eyes.

Happy first day of school. See y’all very soon,” she wrote in the IG story, hinting that she’s yet to set up office in the space left behind by Courtney Kupets. Kupets was fired by Georgia just days ago and the program approached Cecile to take up the role and lead the Gymdogs for the upcoming women’s gymnastics season. The news comes only days after Lendi guided the Team USA stars to their spectacular success at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and naturally, things are exciting for fans around the country.

Even Ryan Roberts, the assistant coach who stepped up to temporarily fill the void left behind by Kupets is eager to see how things take a turn for the better with the iconic gymnastics coach taking up the mantle. In his post on Instagram, Roberts shared his enthusiasm about working with Cecile. “Can’t wait for @cecilelandi to join us!” he wrote just hours ago. With so much ardor, what will Landi bring to the table for the Georgia squad?

Simone Biles’ colleague has a tough task ahead

The GymDogs ended their last season on a pretty depressing note. With a 7-12 overall record, the Georgia team wasn’t among the top performers in the SEC Championships. The program’s NCAA run also didn’t turn out significant with one win and two losses. For obvious reasons, getting someone to get a firm grip on things became essential for the school, and who better to lead the team to glory than the person who has made Simone Biles the icon she is today? Georgia’s athletic director Josh Brooks announced on Thursday that Cecile would be appointed the new co-head coach for the women’s gymnastics contingent, lending her expertise to the team with Ryan sharing the responsibility with her.

In a statement after the news came to the fore, Landi also made it clear she’s looking forward to the opportunity as well. “Throughout my life, gymnastics has provided me some extraordinary opportunities, from traveling the world and competing for my country at the Olympics to coaching amazing athletes at the highest level. Those experiences have helped me become the coach that I am while putting athlete’s well-being first and helping them reach their full potential,” she said. While Biles’ status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time is firmly sealed, Cecile’s next big challenge is to restore the glory days of the GymDogs and hopefully bring them their first NCAA team title since 2008.
