Can Rebeca Andrade's new vault move outshine Simone Biles' legacy in gymnastics?

As gymnastics fans, few things can match the thrill of watching Simone Biles performing the electric Yurchenko Double Pike. The Olympic icon and the move have become synonymous, but watching her execute it again seems to be a thing of the past. Just today, Biles took to Instagram to reveal that she will not be performing the YDP anymore. With fans scurrying for a viable substitute, it now falls on Biles’ arch-rival Rebeca Andrade to keep the gymnastics connoisseurs satiated.

In a recent TikTok video by Rebeca Andrade Updates on September 2, the Brazilian gymnast was heard talking about the possibility of taking over the baton from Simone. In the brief video, the 25-year-old ponders her hopes of performing the coveted Triple-Twisting Yurchenko (TTY). “I really want to do the TTY,” Andrade can be heard saying, but she notes it’s more than just another move for her.

I trained, I saw that I have the ability and it was good,” said the two-time Olympic gold medalist. However, she also had to confess: that her aspirations lie much lower than Biles’ own. “It’s not like: ‘Oh I want to put my name in the code book.’ That’s not it,” said Andrade. Instead, she noted that was her inner gymnastics fan who just wanted to have fun doing the flip. The three-time World Championships gold medalist also claimed that in her mind, she doesn’t have any conflicting thoughts about her wishes.

With that, she also revealed that she has been hitting the gymnasium frequently to get her skills on the same level as her ambition. “If I train more, I will definitely get confident. And then I will present it,” she says matter-of-factly. With all her enthusiasm about the TTY, one might wonder: why haven’t we seen it already then? Simone Biles. She’s the reason.

Andrade stated that she and her team didn’t think the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics was the right stage to showcase her training results. Considering how the USA’s most decorated gymnast of all time landed both her vaults perfectly, Andrade thinks it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. “But we also felt that now in the Olympics, it wasn’t needed. Because it would be really difficult to win…Even if I did the triple,” confessed the gymnast, underscoring how Biles dominated her opponents in Paris. But now that Simone hints that Paris may be the last place where she performed the YDP, Andrade wouldn’t mind using another routine from the same family of moves for her own glory. “Getting up and not having to think about doing a Yurchenko double pike is a blessing,” said Biles after her Parisian triumph. But what are these two moves that we’re talking so much about?

A sumptuous treat waiting for the gymnastics fans?

The YDP or the Biles II as most call it, and the TTY are two gymnastics moves from the vault family. However, while the former, made iconic by Simone Biles herself, is a double-piked backward salto, the TTY involves a triple-twisting layout. While the YDP is a stunningly difficult move to pull off, the TTY isn’t too shabby itself. A gymnast has yet to execute the move successfully, and while the originator of Biles II has been previously rumored to have trained for it, she hasn’t ever performed the TTY at any tournaments. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) assigns a 6.4 score difficulty to Simone Biles’ signature move.

On the other hand, the TTY is yet to get its place in the International Code of Points. But considering the 2 1/2-twisting Yurchenko fetches you a 5.0 difficulty score, Andrade might assume that her chances of matching Biles’ level aren’t over yet. However, the TTY might not be the only weapon that Andrade has in her armory. Adding an extra twist to the Cheng would also allow the Brazilian star to match the difficulty score of the Biles II. But Biles herself has already mentioned that she may take the YDP off her setlist in the coming days of her career. Citing her growing age, Simone now might look to ride into the sunset, but Andrade still has her dreams shining bright. But will she be able to sit at the same table as Biles?
