The state of Minnesota proclaimed a day in her honor called “Sunisa Lee Day?. A momentous surprise awaited Sunisa Lee the day following the two-year anniversary of her historic victory in Tokyo. A bronze bust of Suni was unveiled in St. Paul’s Phalen Regional Park as a touching tribute to her contributions to gymnastics, culture, and Hmong American history. Sunisa had no idea what the statue would look like until that moment, surrounded by her devoted family, the gifted gymnast, and many friends.
As the blue tarp was lifted, Suni’s hand covered her mouth in astonishment, and she couldn’t help but exclaim, “It’s incredible! I love it. I give it a 10,” playfully referencing the perfect scores she achieved in gymnastics. The bronze bust, a stylish creation by Seexeng Lee, spoke volumes about the role model Lee had taken on for her neighborhood and the rest of the world.
