Jordan Chiles' Olympic snub: A justified decision or a blatant injustice?

The US is rallying behind Jordan Chiles. The misfortune that befell the 23-year-old gymnast just days ago is proving to be a hard pill to swallow for the entire nation, and everyone with any power to say something about it is stepping forward without deliberation. Just a few hours ago, rapper Flavor Flav unveiled the clock necklace that he has come up with for the Olympian. And now, it looks like Chiles’ troubles have garnered attention even at the Pentagon.

Supporting the athletes who represent the country on international stages is crucial to acknowledging the burden they bear. With Chiles’ ordeal now a matter of international concern, American political voices are gearing up to show their support and help Jordan through these troubled times.

In a recent post on X, Memphis representative Stephen Cohen highlighted how he’s approached the CAS to mediate the UCLA Bruins star’s issue involving her Olympic medal. “I’ve written to the Court of Arbitration for Sport about #JordanChiles Bronze Medal,” writes Cohen in his post, asserting that he is aware of the fiasco and is willing to help out the 23-year-old gymnast using all the resources at his disposal.

2 issues at conflict here: the judges’ failure to score correctly & an alleged 4-second delay on appealing the score,” notes the Democrat Representative as he also brings attention toward how the IOC should take into consideration that Chiles’ score was miscalculated in the first place which made it necessary to raise the inquiry by her coach.

As proof of his commitment to help the Washington native, Cohen also attached the letter he sent to John Coates, the President of the CAS. In the letter, Stephen emphasizes that the initial incorrect score is what caused the issue, which had to be addressed through the available channels by the athlete and her coaching staff. He also notes that the ‘procedural issue’ being used by the CAS to strip Jordan of her medal is something in which she had no direct involvement. While it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve with Cohen’s intervention, Chiles’ loved ones are doing everything they can to make their voices heard.

Pleas of finding a middle ground met with hostility

Jordan Chiles’ mother Gina has been adamant that the gymnastics icon doesn’t deserve the turmoil that she’s being subjected to. “My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched. And she’s being called disgusting things,” slammed Mrs. Chiles about the CAS and FIG’s decision to ask her daughter to return her Olympic bronze. After Jordan’s score was adjusted following the raised inquiry, Romania’s Ana Barbosu was also removed from the podium, where she had been celebrating her triumph. Now, with Jordan being directed to do the same, gymnastics icon Nadia Comaneci believes that such a tug-of-war can adversely affect the athletes’ mental well-being.

Comaneci suggested that the medal should be awarded to all the gymnasts who were involved in the predicament, but her words fell on deaf ears. It was also revealed only a couple of days ago that the USA and Romania were also in agreement to share the medal, but the IOC remained stern on its decision to take away Jordan’s haul from the French capital.
