Harrison Butker, the NFL star, had found himself in deep waters. In a recent visit to the Benedictine College, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker commented on his beliefs about religion and feminism. And well, it did not sit well with the fans and critics alike. Speaking about the LGBTQ community, Butker went ahead and stated that celebrating Pride Month was a “deadly sin.” He also disapproved of the concept of equality and diversity.
Meanwhile, it was when Butker decided to speak about the women, things got controversial. He directly implied that women enjoy getting married and embracing motherhood more than their careers. He also quoted Taylor Swift to justify his points and all hell has broken loose since. Taking a dig at the NFL athlete, US Gymnast Christina Chauvenet lashed out against his comments.

Christina Chauvenet is a retired US gymnast and currently works as a commentator for the NCAA. Replying to Butker’s controversial remarks, Chauvenet uploaded an X status to mock the Chiefs’ star. She wrote, “I’m drinking a cold one and watching sports while my husband is cooking dinner, I think I’m doing feminism right.”
Some background is that my husband is the kind of guy that took a graduate seminar in feminism for fun and is my biggest cheerleader as a broadcaster. Harrison Butker, if you're reading this, my husband is available to give you a crash course on supporting women. https://t.co/tPVIzG7daG

She later backed it up with another update that read, “Some background is that my husband is the kind of guy that took a graduate seminar in feminism for fun and is my biggest cheerleader as a broadcaster. Harrison Butker, if you’re reading this, my husband is available to give you a crash course on supporting women.”

Needless to say, Butker’s speech on the occasion of the graduation of the Benedictine College has had a huge uproar. Butker gave the example of his wife and pointed out that she truly began to enjoy her life once she got married and became a mother. The NFL star then went on to quote Taylor Swift and said, “As my teammate’s girlfriend says: ‘Familiarity breeds contempt.” For the uninitiated, the line was quoted from Swift’s song, ‘Bejewelled’ and such an unprecedented use of the phrase made the Swifties mad.
Several notable organizations too, clarified their stances on the matter. The NFL stated that Butker’s comments were his own point of view and the NFL, in no way, supports his alignment. GLAAD also expressed their resentment with the comments that Butker made about the LGBTQ community. However, even though Harrison Butker might have differing opinions, the present state of women’s sports paints an entirely different picture.

Gone are the days of woes when the NCAA gymnastics was finding it hard to get audiences. With an influx of top-tier gymnasts rising from the NCAA like Suni Lee and more, the crowd reception has been on the up. Just like any other mainstream sports, the NCAA women’s gymnasts are now being requested by the crowds for a selfie or perhaps an autograph. Over the years, the NCAA has become a safe place for gymnasts to express themselves.
Add to that the option of promoting themselves and earning from it all while being in college. The boom in the NCAA women’s division is evident in the rising numbers of television broadcasting. Giants like ABC and ESPN have been steadily broadcasting the games since 2022. Not only gymnastics, but the women’s NCAA as a whole has been in the news for all the right reasons. Thus, contrary to Harrison Butker, these women are enjoying their careers with equal enthusiasm, along with their personal duties.
