For the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) currently underway in Gangwon, Korea(January 19–February 1, 2024) the British Olympic Association has 39 competitors representing Team GB. These young athletes aged from 15 to 18 are participating in an astounding 11 of the 15 sports this season. One notable inclusion in the lot is Eve Muirhead, a four-time Olympian who captained the women’s curling squad for squad GB that won the gold medal in Beijing 2022.

Muirhead has led a prestigious British delegation, bringing experience to the team’s youthful and exciting lineup. Recently an update announced the golden moment brought home by the GB team.

On day 7 of the YOG Gangwon 2024, a moment of excitement flowed when Great Britain won their first medal of the Games in the curling event. A tweet was shared on X by @Olympics with the caption, The final is over! It’s the first Winter Youth Olympic #Gold for a British team in curling! Logan Carson, Tia Laurie, Archie Hyslop, and Holly Burke from Great Britain seize it with a memorable comeback win!

During the dramatic extra end, Great Britain defeated Denmark 7–5 to win the Youth Olympic gold medal. After Great Britain stole points in the fifth and seventh ends to take a 5-4 lead, Denmark immediately capitalized with a four-point advantage in the second end. Without requiring their last stone, Great Britain won the extra end and secured the gold medals thanks to Denmark’s failed draw. Switzerland, captained by James Dryburgh, defeated China’s Li Zetai 10-8 to win bronze.

Great Britain (6-1) and Denmark (5-2) dominated Group B in the 16-team round-robin with two pools. Meanwhile, China and the USA won Group A 6-1, while Japan and Sweden tied at 5-2, with Japan earning a postseason berth. Switzerland defeated the USA 4-3 and Denmark defeated Japan 8-3 in the qualifying matches. In the semifinals, Denmark defeated China 6-4 and Great Britain defeated Switzerland 8-6.

The winning team’s reaction

The Team of 16-year-olds made the curling roster led by Logan Carson supported by lead Holly Burke, second Archie Hyslop, and vice-skip Tia Laurie. After the amazing debut feat, Carson said, “It’s absolutely amazing and to come back from behind is really special. I couldn’t be prouder of this team.”

The lead, Burke, shared, “I don’t usually get emotional but this competition has made me get that way. You can’t ask for much more than gold, can you? We always stay together, we always keep each other strong.” The young curling team made history by winning gold at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics. Their triumphant comeback and team spirit showed the bright future of British curling.
