After being tested positive for trimetazidine, figure skater Kamila Valieva finally has some good news to celebrate. Recently, a Russian tribunal gave a verdict in Valieva’s favor. The tribunal also made another important announcement in the Valieva doping case.

The Russian tribunal gave its verdict more than months after Valieva failed her drug test in December 2021. The verdict also imposed a minor sanction on Valieva. This sanction could have a major impact on Winter Olympics 2022’s results. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) also reacted to the tribunal’s decision.

WADA issued its strong response, “The tribunal found that although the athlete had committed an Anti-Doping Rule Violation, she bore ‘no fault or negligence’ for it.” Adding to this, WADA said that the only sanction Valieva would face was that her results would be disqualified when her samples for drugs were collected. This indicates that Valieva will not get the gold medal she won in the Winter Olympics 2022 which might be given to Team USA who had earlier secured second place.

Later, giving its opinion on the tribunal’s decision, WADA said that it would evaluate all aspects of the Valieva doping case. While this reflects that Valieva might face other strict actions, the tribunal’s present decision provides Valieva with a temporary breather.

This breather has come after WADA criticized the Russian Anti-Doping agency. At that time, WADA’s president had also given a strong statement.Despite putting RUSADA under formal notice to resolve the Kamila Valieva case promptly, no progress was made,” WADA had stated. WADA’s active presence reflects the huge impact of Valieva’s doping case. This doping scandal also brought about a massive change, which will impact athletes competing in figure skating.
