Simone Biles is among the greatest gymnasts of all time. The four-time Olympic gold medalist is more than just a prolific champion; she also doesn’t shy away from raising concerns on various issues. In 2021, Biles joined fellow Olympic legends like Michael Phelps in highlighting the importance of athletes’ mental health. Now, she is raising concerns about an important human rights issue.

Biles recently took to Twitter to highlight a new anti-LGBTQ bill that the parliament has passed in Uganda. Here’s what she had to say.?

On March 23, 2023, the multiple-time gymnastics world champion posted on Twitter. She retweeted a post on the Twitter page SAY CHEESE!?about the new bill in Uganda. According to a BBC report, the new bill introduces many new criminal offenses against queer individuals. Acts of homosexuality are already illegal in the East African nation. However, even identifying as gay could land an individual in trouble.?

“You can now go to jail for life in Uganda, by identifying as gay according to a new anti-LGBT bill,”?states the post that Biles retweeted. The report also states that even friends and family of an individual identifying as queer would have a duty to report them to the authorities. Simone Biles shared the news with her 1.6 million Twitter followers.

“For life?.. that?s a lil absurd… love is love,”?wrote the Presidential medal for freedom recipient.?“Y?all be fighting for the wrong things !!!”?Biles added in the caption of her Twitter post. However, while the Ugandan parliament has passed the bill, the final decision lies with President Yoweri Museveni. Museveni will have the choice to veto or approve the bill.

Only time will tell if the bill becomes law. However, time and again, Simone Biles has spoken up about many pressing issues.

Never shying away from shedding light on hard-hitting issues

During the Tokyo Olympics, Biles caused a stir after pulling out midway through the competition. While many people didn’t support her decision, Biles never second-guessed her reason for pulling out of the competition. She spoke about the necessity of paying attention to athletes’ mental health. The mental pressure of competing at an elite level is an issue many athletes face but rarely talk about.

Simone Biles is also the voice of the voiceless. As an animal lover, Biles has worked with animal shelters and other NGOs to raise awareness about adopting abandoned and neglected pets.
