Nam Hyun Hee has been in the fencing industry for over two decades. Over the years, the 42-year-old has successfully managed to mark her presence with numerous accolades to her name. From team gold in world championships to individual silver in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Nam Hyun Hee has been a remarkable athlete nationally and overseas. However, with recent news, the athlete has been obliged into an unfortunate situation.

Nam Hyun Hee recently confirmed her relationship with the son of one of Korea’s high-profile families. Unfortunately, as the controversy spurred around her ex-fiancé’s involvement in numerous matters, the athlete was brought into the midst. The ongoing case has provided Nam Hyun Hee with an unforeseen rocky road.

Olympics fencer encounters a dire situation

Earlier this year, following her divorce from cyclist Gong Hyo-suk, Nam Hyun Hee gave a nod to her relationship with Jeon Cheong-jo. Jeon, her now-ex-fiancé was arrested last week in a high-profile fraud case. The case was opened days after the couple walked in for a magazine interview last month. Following the news, Hyun Hee broke off the engagement with Jeon later in October. The 27-year-old later revealed that the money from the filed case had been spent on the Olympian. Thus adding on to her position under scrutiny and investigation.

The fencing icon has said that she was deceived and was unaware of any criminal records involving her ex-fiancé. However, a couple- victims of the fraud case have revealed the involvement of the Olympian, further filing a case. The local news, report that due to the ongoing investigation and her name being involved in the case, Nam Hyun Hee has been barred from leaving Korea.

Though the immediate facts of the matters remain unknown, the police have been working well around the case. “We plan to proceed with the investigation swiftly,” police said in a statement to  AFP; reports sports inquiere. Prior to the case and after her retirement, Nam Hyun Hee remained involved with the sport.

Nam Hyun Hee: the Korean fencing fame

The Olympian has been described as one of the best female fencers in the nation’s history and rightly so. In 2014, she was chosen to recite the athlete’s oath at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Republic of Korea. Before that, Hyun Hee has added multiple awards as a sports star of the country to her shelves. Sports Star, Popularity Award, and Best Player have all made their way to the Olympian.

Throughout her career, the 42-year-old has conquered domains from the Asian Games to the World Championships and ultimately to the Olympics. While she holds 2 medals – a bronze and a silver – in the Olympics, she has clinched 6 golds and a bronze in the Asian Games. However, following her excellent career, Nam Hyun Hee announced her retirement in 2019. Nonetheless, she remained true to the sport as she established a fencing academy in the same year.
