“Became Tony Hawk in a Wheel Chair”: Lewis Hamilton Saved His Brother From Bullying by Offering Him an Unusual Advice

Nicolas Hamilton is a rising star in British Motorsport. The half-brother of F1 legend Lewis Hamilton has changed his life upside down with the power of his dedication and perseverance. Nicolas was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was just 18 months old.

Doctors told his parents that he would never walk again. Furthermore, his eyesight will turn weak as he gets older. However, against all odds, Nicolas proved the doctors wrong, and by the age of 17, he overcame his need for a wheelchair.

Advice by brother Lewis Hamilton that changed Nicolas’ life

There was a time during Nicolas’ school days when he was bullied around by his mates. Nicolas said during a motivational speech, “People coming over to me, pulling me backward in my wheelchair, leaving me stranded, and I wasn’t able to fight for myself”. Those were difficult times that led Nicolas to his brother Lewis to ask for advice on what to do.

When Lewis heard about this, he told him, “Well, you need this wheelchair, so we will make you cooler.” Lewis explained further, “We would like do some tricks, you know, like Tony Hawk”. Hence, his younger brother agreed to his advice. Nicolas said, “I became Tony Hawk in a wheelchair. I was like jumping steps, doing wheelies, spinning around”. 

From the wheelchair to the BTCC 

Lewis Hamilton has been heard multiple times saying that Nicolas is his biggest inspiration and he is proud of his younger brother. After being in a wheelchair and getting bullied at 15, Nicolas turned it around and succeeded in walking without support by the time he was 17.  

The years of hard work and determination paid off when his parents agreed to his request to race. In 2011, he started racing in the Renault Clio Cup series, and there has been no turning back. Later in 2015, he became the first disabled athlete to compete in the British Touring Car Championship.
