In the world of sports, the term “underdog” is widely used, and for good reason. There’s always a chance for an unexpected upset or a victory against all odds. This thrill of uncertainty is not limited to mainstream sports; it extends to equestrian racing as well. In this realm of equestrian brilliance, not everyone can predict which horse will emerge victorious, defying all expectations.
Recently, a remarkable underdog named Becky’s Joker shook the equestrian world by storm, achieving a major upset during the Grade III Schuylerville Stakes at the prestigious Saratoga Race Course. Battling out at some tricky odds, this rising star secured a stunning difference of lengths win in her very first career start.

As reported by Blood-Horse, defying all expectations, she dominated the six-furlong race, leaving her competitors trailing behind by a remarkable 3 1/4 lengths. The odds of 21-1 had not deterred her, proving that in equestrian sport, anything can happen. Initially, her trainer Garry Contessa had plans to wait for the Grade I Spinaway Stakes scheduled for September 3rd, but Becky’s Joker’s impressive performance has led to a change in his decision. However, her extraordinary performance during a four-furlong workout in 47.40 with exercise rider Carlos Lopez on July 26th changed the course of their plans.
Witnessing her brilliance, Contessa expressed his amazement, stating, “I am not going to say it’s definite, but she has gone from questionable to probable for the Adirondack. She has forced us to go in that direction. Off this work, it was so impressive.” This remarkable feat has left Contessa with a perplexing decision, considering an earlier race for Becky’s Joker. With the Adirondack Stakes (Grade III) on the horizon, her trainer believes that participating in this event could pave the way for her triumphant return to the Spinaway Stakes (Grade I).
