Even having Jennifer Gates didn’t help Egypt’s equestrian star Nayel Nassar’s Olympic dream. Eying to compensate for his poor result at the Tokyo Games (he placed 24th in individual events three years ago in Japan), Nassar was looking forward to making Paris the stage where he achieved golden glory, however, it wasn’t to be. Egypt didn’t manage to find a spot on the podium in the team jumping event, and the entire nation was looking at the Google founder Bill Gates’ son-in-law to make up for the miss, only to be left heartbroken.
In his Instagram post from just an hour ago, philanthropist Jennifer’s husband made the shocking announcement of withdrawing from the 2024 Olympics. “After successfully passing the first veterinary inspection earlier this week, Coronado unfortunately sustained a minor injury in the days after, and regretfully we must end our Olympic journey here,” Nayel notified his fans through his post.
Nassar went on to elaborate on why this made it necessary for him and Coronado to pull out of the Games entirely. “As per the rules, no substitutions are allowed after the first horse inspection is completed, which leaves us no option but to withdraw entirely,” explained the equestrian star with a heavy heart. However, it wasn’t just Nayel who was concerned about his four-legged partner’s “minor” injury.

“This decision was made after thorough discussions with our veterinary team and the Egyptian Federation, and we all agree that it is our duty to prioritize Coronado’s long-term health and recovery,” assured Nassar that the horse’s well-being is the top priority for all the stakeholders involved. He also said that with his bovine buddy, he will soon be back to competing “at the highest levels,” despite sacrificing his “life-long dream” of showcasing his mettle on the grandest stage.

For any athlete, the Olympic Games promise the utmost honor they can possibly achieve in their pursuit of greatness. Understandably, having to opt out of the tournament because of such a bolt from the blue would be gut-wrenching, and Nayel doesn’t deny it once. However, noting how everyone is putting Coronado first is giving him the hope to return stronger than ever.
While Nassar now has to watch his national teammates from the sidelines of the iconic Chateau de Versailles, it looks like his wife Jennifer and father-in-law Bill didn’t get the chance to cheer to their heart’s content.

Bill was previously seen in the stands at the Paris Olympics multiple times. Only yesterday, Jennifer Gates also flew to France taking a break from her medical profession at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York. Ever since graduating med school, Jen has been putting in hours at the institution, and her equestrian career has taken a backseat for the time being. Moreover, with their expectations for a second baby are keeping the plates full for the couple. With that in mind, Nayel was quite possibly also looking forward to welcoming his baby to the world as an Olympic medalist, but that desire had to be traded to take care of his equine partner right now.
On the other hand, with Egypt not being able to make many waves at the French capital, much of the country’s hopes of bagging a spot on the podium revolved around Nayel and his skills as a celebrated equestrian star. However, with Nayel being the only individual jumping star from Egypt at this year’s Olympics, even that ambition has become a distant dream. And yet, as equestrian fans, all we can hope for is to see Coronado and Nassar back in their element as soon as possible.
