When it comes to the Olympics, there are three sub-strata of equestrian sports that are included: showjumping, eventing, and dressage. Simply put, showjumping involves the rider and their horse jumping over obstacles. Imperfect jumps earn them penalties and the lowest time taken earns them a victory. Sounds pretty straightforward, right?
Then why is showjumping considered one of the most thrilling sports in the equestrian arena? This particular clip, which shows a horse and a rider during a showjumping event, will prove exactly how exciting and difficult showjumping can be.

The video, which was posted on Instagram by @happy_hooves1991, was a clip taken at the Hamburg Derby, an iconic showjumping event that takes place in Germany. A rider, in full equestrian attire, was seen riding a huge tall horse. The horse beautifully crossed the first hurdle, and then proceeded to cautiously walk down a slope. Then came the highlight of the video.

In a move that speaks volumes about the grace of the horse and the experience and control of the rider, the equine wonder crossed another hurdle. The jump exhibited by the mount was an astonishing one, as the entire body of the horse stretched out to ensure that the jump was a clean one. In fact, the entire leap was so good that the horse itself celebrated the amazing achievement by kicking both its hind legs out in a quick stomp.
In showjumping, each obstacle is made of specially designed ‘poles’ which are held in place horizontally by a shallow ledge on a set of uprights known as ‘wings’. The average height of an Olympic show jump is 1.65m high which translates to approximately 5 feet and 5 inches. Controlling horses, who are essentially thousands of pounds of muscle, in a way that they make a clear jump is not an easy feat. However, this horse and its rider were able to attain a perfect jump, which left the audience flabbergasted.
Netizens react to an astounding jump
After looking at the little stomp which the horse performed after successfully completing the jump, a viewer commented, “the horse was very proud of that move!” Indeed, the buck seemed like a celebratory move, as another person wrote, “That horse EARNED THAT BUCK!!! Great job by both!” With the fans going gaga at the little buck, someone else wrote, “Lol the little buck at the end That person is incredible”.

In addition to this, many praised the rider for the restraint shown while climbing down the slope. A viewer made the observation, “What a kind rider, he allowed the horse a moment to analyse the drop and remained quiet and steady in his hands seat and legs. Didn’t force it didn’t over ride the next jump, just allowed the horse to place themself”. Another fan wrote, “And that’s on putting your own and your horse’s safety above the timer. Well ridden”. The video was indeed a perfect example of what a show jump should look like.
