One of the most tragic things that can take place in the equestrian community is when one of our four-legged friends is taken away from us. Horses and humans have an intricate bond, a fact that even non-horse owners will agree with. However, at certain times, there is tragic news of horses dying that can be heart-wrenching. In a somber tale like this, a horse, unfortunately, passed away on July 17 after a collision that took place on a highway due to traffic buildup.

The news has left the equestrian community full of grief and shock, as the manner of death of the horse is sadly, not a peaceful one or because of natural causes. Regrettably, the horse died away from grassy landscapes and open farms, stuck on a man-made road in a man-made container. It is agonizing to imagine the pain and suffering that the horse must have gone through during its last moments.

The incident took place on M1 near Northampton after a collision occurred following a breakdown on a section of a smart motorway. It reportedly took place around 6:40 p.m. on the northbound carriageway between junction 14 and 15 which is part of the ‘all lane running’ smart motorway stretch of the M1. Till now, it’s thought that a Renault Masters horsebox malfunctioned on the M1 and had to stop because of the same. After that, a National Highway vehicle also stopped to assist the malfunctioning one.

As both vehicles stood on the road, a lorry that was barreling down the highway crashed into the National Highway vehicle and then the horsebox. The lorry driver was injured and taken to the hospital. The horse, however, was sadly announced dead on the scene. According to a Northampton Chronicle report, a Northamptonshire Police spokeswoman revealed that the exact details of the accident had not been fully discovered, and an investigation was going on for the same. The driver of the HGV that resulted in the collision is a man in his 40s and a resident of West Midlands.

A beloved member of the family lost to the claws of death

The Hochstetler family, hailing from the town of Monroe, underwent unfathomable grief after they had to put down a loved one. Their cherished horse Shadow got severely injured in a road accident, similar to the one that took this poor horse’s life away as well. The difference was, Shadow’s equestrian owner was also atop the horse, and had, in fact, taken his equine friend out for a small ride.

However, that ride soon turned into a horrible nightmare as a van came towards them at a high speed. Shadow’s owner tried to swerve the horse away from the vehicle, however, it was already too late. Both the horse and the rider were severely injured. After being taken to the vet, the doctor decided it would be more compassionate to euthanize Shadow. The family lost a beloved member but took solace in the fact that Shadow came to his home before his demise. However, the poor horse that died on the M1 did not get the same chance and breathed his last far away from home.
