The Saratoga Race Course Barn has been in the middle of a heated controversy after the death of a three-year-old filly. Maple Leaf Mel stumbled on the track and got severely injured. On-site veterinarians tended to her and decided to euthanize the poor creature. Many equestrian fans, which included high-profile personalities like David Portnoy, voiced their outrage at the act and demanded reforms from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. In the midst of this chaos, a bright new arrival at the Saratoga Barn has changed the atmosphere completely.
Maple Leaf Mel was named after her trainer Melanie Giddings. She was heartbroken after the tragic demise of the special horse, but her spirits were lifted when the Saratoga Barn accepted a new filly.

Melanie Giddings named the horse Mel’s Baby Sister and gave her the stall of her most cherished horse. She identified many resemblances between Maple Leaf Mel and the new horse, which gave filled her with joy. Before the new arrival, Giddings was unable to decide what to do with Maple Leaf Mel’s stall. Now Mel’s Baby Sister occupies it as a sort of natural continuance. Mel’s Baby Sister came from the same sire, Cross Traffic, and has the same color as Maple Leaf Mel. Legendary Football coach Bill Parcells purchased Mel’s Baby Sister in May 2023 for $110,000.
Until recently, a wreath adorned the gate in front of the stall where Mel’s Baby Sister is staying. This wreath was given to the winner of the Test Stakes, but trainer Brendan Walsh conceded it to Giddings in recognition of Maple Leaf Mel. The horse would have won the race had it not been for the terrible accident. Speaking to Racing Post, Melanie Giddings said, “It shows you there is good in horseracing”. She was alluding to the show of support from the equestrian community after the accident.
