Is the Paris 2024 Olympics less exciting without Charlotte Dujardin? Share your thoughts!

Ghosts of days past are never truly behind us, as Charlotte Dujardin’s misfortune has proved once again. One of Britain’s most decorated equestrian stars, the three-time Olympian Dujardin, has been handed a six-month ban by the FEI (International Federation for Equestrian Sports) for a recently surfaced video filmed “years ago”. Subsequently, the 39-year-old will also not partake in the Paris Olympics to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

According to the BBC, the old video shows Dujardin “making an error of judgement,” during a training session. The FEI elaborated on the matter, claiming that the six-time European Dressage Championships gold medalist was seen “engaging in conduct contrary to the principles of horse welfare – during a training session conducted at Ms Dujardin’s private stable“.

The authorities announced the ban as a response to an official complaint against Dujardin for beating a horse excessively, as seen in the video. In the letter sent to the FEI by the lawyer of the person who filed an official complaint yesterday, it was stated that “the video shows Ms Dujardin beating a horse excessively with a whip“. However, with the unfortunate event transpiring just three days before the 2024 Games, many can’t hide their disappointment at how Charlotte could do something that’s so unlike her.

On the other hand, it was also a difficult task to muster the courage to speak up about the incident, as noted by the Dutch lawyer Stephan Wensing. “My client is aware that this complaint could have far-reaching consequences for Ms Dujardin, including disciplinary sanctions. My client had to think long and hard about whether to bring this to your attention this way,” Wensing was quoted in an article by The Guardian.

On the other hand, the FEI seems determined to carry out an apt punishment in accordance with the equestrian celebrity’s deeds. “It is our responsibility and crucial that we address any instances of abuse, as equine welfare cannot be compromised,” said FEI’s president Ingmar De Vos in an official statement. Moreover, keeping parity with the FEI’s verdict on the matter, the British Equestrian (BEF) and British Dressage (BD) have also announced a provisional ban for Dujardin, adding to her woes. And yet, Dujardin seems to retain her signature poise that has become a cornerstone of her global popularity, even in the face of adversity.

In an Instagram post from earlier today, Dujardin came up with an apology to come clean about the entire fiasco. “…the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is investigating and I have made the decision to withdraw from all competition – including the Paris Olympics – while this process takes place,” stated the three-time Olympic gold medalist.”What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils,” she said while also acknowledging that excuses can’t get her out of the soup she’s in right now.

I am deeply ashamed,” rings Charlotte’s confession. While her disappointment is understandable, the decision of the FEI to prioritize horse welfare above pandering to the popularity and Olympic goals of the equestrian celebrity should also be commended. “Despite the unfortunate timing, we believe this action reaffirms the FEI’s commitment to welfare as the guardians of our equine partners and the integrity of our sport,” De Vos also pledged to ensure wellbeing of the animals.

While Becky Moody could ensure that Britain doesn’t slide off the race for equestrian gold in Paris as the replacement rider, how do you think this can affect Charlotte in the long run or shake up the reputation she has so meticulously earned over the years?
