Horses are a universal emotion shared by all equestrian enthusiasts. When this passion grows and becomes dominant in a person, that individual generally becomes an equestrian rider. Though simply loving horses is not enough, it is the spark that humans require. Most great-name players share these characteristics of being passionate about the sport, and with a little luck, they are able to get to the top.

While it may appear to be luck, it is actually opportunities that come to individuals. As the saying goes, ‘opportunities don’t always present themselves’; Kate Shoemaker made certain she didn’t miss hers. The equestrian fanatic from Eagle, Idaho, is now one of the most notable Paralympic athletes. It all began with her love for horses when she was six years old and has continued to this day.

Her amazing path was aided by opportunities for the taking when she was six years old and watched two Arabian horses owned by a neighbor. Because Idaho is not a horse area, her neighbor’s horses being an uncommon sight may have contributed to her fascination with them. Her parents believed that her sudden interest in horses would fade with time. They had no idea at the moment that the opposite would happen. Her intrigue was piqued on Halloween when the same neighbor offered her a show suit to develop a costume that would be the key to what was to come.

The clothing was that of an equestrian rider, and little Kate was intrigued by it, commenting, “From the helmet to the boots, I just thought it was the most majestic, classical thing to be sitting up on these beautiful animals.” Her parents changed their minds when they saw their daughter’s passion for horses was not going away. The chance came one day when they noticed an ad in the newspaper for the sale of a 21-year-old grey gelding at Once Upon a Horse, a stable on the outskirts of Eagle. While the farm’s proximity to her home was a bonus, the fact that the facility had expertise in teaching young athletes for the equestrian industry was a true benefit.

Despite suffering from partial paralysis of her right leg and overall weakness on the right side, she persevered because of her unwavering willpower. Her experience as a member of the US team that brought home a bronze medal in the Tokyo Paralympics will be essential in the forthcoming Paris Olympics. “It’s a team sport, so it doesn’t just come down to whether your scores are higher than their scores,” she added. “You’re always thinking about how we’re going to do as a team and how we slot riders into positions that are going to give the team the most advantage.” While handling all of this, she is also a terrific vet.

She explains, “The most important thing is that my patients are taken care of, and to be honest, they always come first because the health of our horses is the most important thing possible,” while further stating, “But then I always make sure to make time for training, even if it’s 1:00 o’clock in the morning and we’re doing it from, you know, lights reflecting off the barn. It’s horses from sun-up to sun-down, and oftentimes even beyond.”
