It’s been a dream season for the newly crowned horse racing champion William Buick. The 2023 blessed the British jockey with some memorable moments. He earlier got his hands on the ‘longtime ambition’ of winning his first championship, and soon followed that with a $750,000 victory aboard Nations Pride at the Canadian International. Now, as the season closes out, his stellar season has been bestowed with an even more prestigious award.

In a world where equestrian sport is gaining tremendous popularity, the Norwegian-originated jockey has put on a spectacle in the British horse racing arena. As Buick was crowned the jockey of the year again this year, the 35-year-old expressed his pure delight in a recent interview.

In the latest interview with At The Races of Sky Sports, the Champion Jockey William Buick expressed his feelings after winning the Lester’s Flat Jockey of the Year award. “I’m grateful and feel very humble to have received the Lester’s Flat Jockey of the Year award”, he said. William called the award special as the voting was done by his fellow jockeys. “Knowing you are held in high regard by your fellow jockeys, there’s no better feeling!” he added.

William further said that he had aimed for the exact thing at the start of the season, and was very happy to achieve it given that it was no easy task. After riding an astonishing 166 winners from 733 rides this season, the 35-year-old hopes to replicate the same form next season. The 2023 Flat Jockey of the Year marked William’s third successive trophy at the Professional Jockeys Association Lesters Awards.

William Buick caps off a memorable horse racing season

Earlier this year in October, William Buick defended the Jockey Championship title at Ascot’s end-of-season celebrations. He kicked off the season with a stellar victory in the Lockinge Stakes (Grade 1) atop Modern Games in May. William then went on to secure more Grade 1 victories including the Canadian International Stake, Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes, and the prestigious Breeders’ Cup.

The Lesters Award was the perfect topping on William’s huge cake of 166 victories. It undoubtedly marked his most memorable season. In addition to him, Brian Hughes was crowned Jump Jockey of the Year while Billy Loughnane was bestowed with the Apprentice Jockey of the Year award. With an unending passion to win more, William would be surely eying to win this award for the fourth straight year next season.
