NHL Washington Capitals center, Nicklas Backstrom, experienced just that when he embarked on an equestrian escapade in his hometown, with his fellow Swedish NHL mates, Elias Lindholm and Calle Jarnkrok.

The trio decided to try their hand at trotting, a popular horse cart racing sport, in which horses pull a two-wheeler cart during their off day. A video capturing their race went viral after it was shared by Gavletravet on their social media handle. On a sunny Saturday, Backstrom, Lindholm, and Jarnkrok found themselves at the picturesque Gavletravet farm in Gavle, Sweden. To the surprise of many, they were participating in a thrilling trotting race, with each of them sitting on their respective carts, accompanied by skilled jockeys. The event was shared on Gavletravet’s Instagram handle with a caption “NHL TROTTING CHALLENGE” and instantly caught fire on social media platforms, leaving fans in awe of their favorite hockey stars indulging in this unique equestrian sport.

As the race commenced, the three NHL stars displayed their competitive spirit, driving their horse-drawn carts with determination. Calle Jarnkrok’s cart, pulled by horse 1, took an early lead, with Lindholm closely following in second place, driving horse 3. Backstrom was not far behind, also steering horse 3. In the thrilling finish, Jarnkrok emerged as the champion, earning the coveted first-place trophy, while Lindholm secured a commendable second place.

Backstrom may have finished third, but his enthusiasm and enjoyment were evident as he shared his thoughts after the race. Despite not winning, Backstrom cherished the experience, describing it as “a hell of an experience” that was incredibly fun and exhilarating and stated, “It’s of course a bummer, but I have to say it was a hell of an experience, It is incredibly fun, it’s fast, and we got a feel for the weather a little as well… Got a little dirty, it was very fun I thought.” Backstrom’s involvement in the equestrian world extends beyond this event, as his company invests in horse trotting racing.
