The Global Equestrian Group (GEG) has its eyes set on expansion. GEG is hoping to expand its showgrounds in Wellington, Florida, and it’s turning to the Wellington community for support. They need the approval of the Village Council to execute their expansion plans. The company has already secured an agreement with the owner of the land, equine industry tycoon, Mark Bellissimo.

However, it still needs to get the zoning changed from residential to equestrian commercial recreation. This strategic move is essential for GEG’s grand vision to expand the showgrounds to an impressive 180-acre site. Having already operated the show jumping grounds under the banner “Wellington International” for the past two years, GEG now seeks to take things to the next level.

GEG wants to acquire 90 acres of land to the south of the existing showgrounds. According to a Eurodressage report, company President Michael Stone’s press release stated, “We recognize the need to dramatically expand and enhance the showgrounds to incorporate it onto one large, consolidated site to better support all three horse disciplines–Jumpers, Hunters, and Dressage.” The company says that this would allow it to create a “one large, consolidated site” to better support all three horse disciplines: jumpers, hunters, and dressage. However, Bellissimo’s master plan for the area also includes two luxury communities, Wellington North and Wellington South.

These communities would include a total of 448 homes, divided between villas, low rises, and single-family homes, as well as a golf course. The Wellington Equestrian Preserve Committee (EPC) has already voted against Bellissimo’s proposal to build the golf course. They are concerned that the development would have a negative impact on the equestrian community.

In the meantime, GEG has hired Populous, a global architecture and design firm, to plan, design, and create the new showgrounds. Populous has extensive experience building venues for Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup, and Super Bowl as well as equestrian facilities, including the Ascot Racecourse and Churchill Downs. Within this project, Mark Bellissimo has collaborated with another luxury group that includes some high-profile names like golf legend Tiger Woods and popstar Justin Timberlake.

The Wellington project is being developed and operated by a luxury development group called Nexus. Golf legends Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, and popstar Justin Timberlake formed the group in 2015 with Joe Lewis and his Tavistock Group. Their current investment for The Wellington is in the range of $100 million. With this project, the Nexus group aims to make headways into the South Florida market. The group aims to create The Wellington by taking inspiration from one of their sites in The Bahamas, called Albany.

GEG believes that the new showgrounds would be a major asset to the Wellington community. The company says that the facilities would attract more events and visitors, which would boost the local economy. However, the future of equestrian sports in Wellington hangs in the balance, with crucial votes scheduled for the summer. It remains to be seen whether GEG will be able to get the approval it needs to expand its showgrounds. Although the company is hopeful that the community will support its plans.
