Tucked away somewhere in Scotland is Lanarkshire County. The region is famous for many things, including being the house of one of the four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely, New Lanark. Although, it can be argued that it gets the majority of its fame, especially in the equestrian community, for being the birthplace of the beautiful Clydesdale breed of horses.
The Clydesdale breed finds its origin in Lanarkshire in Scotland. The breed is named after the iconic water body that twists and turns through Lanarkshire, the River Clyde. Clydesdales are some of the strongest and largest horses out there, the fact that they are alluring to look at is an added bonus. A peek into the evolution of one of the largest horse breeds
The Clydesdale breed was created to work as industry horses and has now become the draft horse of choice, especially in Scotland and Northern England. The average height that these creatures possess comes around 17 to 18 hands tall, which translates to about 68 to 72 inches. They weigh around 2000 pounds (900 kilograms). The late eighteenth century already began to see efforts from breeders to produce this strong and advanced breed. However, the name ‘Clydesdale’ was used in relation to these special horses only in the year 1826.

Clydesdale horses contain stallion blood, as Flemish stallions were bred with local mares to produce the breed. The Clydesdale was the first British draft horse breed to get its own stud book, beating the equally famous English Shire Horse. The unmatched flexibility and strength in their leg and pastern joints are what give them their distinctive long stride. These horses are, no doubt, majestic, a quality that any equestrian would want in their horse.
