Equestrians share an immense love for horse riding and being at it is one of the most peaceful things for them. However, at times it can also cause fatal accidents for the riders. Last year, a 33-year-old equestrian named Mhairi Mackay, lost her life while riding her beloved horse, Gusto. Although she made immense efforts to save herself, fate had other plans.

In June 2022, the online news website Daily Record reported the fatal accident of the young equestrian. The sudden demise of the Vice Chairperson of the Caledonian Riding Club saddened the equestrian community in Scottish Highlands. Many expressed condolences for Mackay and her family.

How did equestrian Mhairi Mackay die?

On 21 June 2022, Mhairi Mackay was riding her chest gelding horse, Gusto in the evening. While riding across the Poyntzfield on the Black Isle she faced a devastating accident as she fell from her horse. Although the equestrian made efforts to save herself, she died on spot.

The news of Mackay’s horrific death was shared by her father Walter Goodwin on social media. He wrote, “Last night our beautiful, talented, and kind Mhairi had an accident while out hacking with her beloved horse Gusto. Despite the efforts of many kind people Mhairi died.” He also added, “We appreciate all the kind words and offers of help already received.”

Nevertheless, the equestrian community also mourned the tragic loss. People from the Caledonian Riding Club, expressed on Mackay’s dad’s post,

“Mhairi was a dedicated member of the committee working tirelessly behind the scenes as well as a great competitor and supporter of all.

Someone wrote that the talented equestrian died doing what loved;

“Mhairi died doing what she absolutely loved she will be sorely missed, sleep tight lovely lady.”

To pay tribute to Mhairi Mackay, organizers of a showjumping event at the Royal Highland Show which was held on the weekend, encouraged people to wear blue ribbons.

Equestrian accidents are indeed quite dangerous. Last year, a British grade IV para rider, Izzy Palmer, became unconscious after a devastating accident while horse riding.

Palmer was knocked out in a few seconds

22-year-old Izzy Palmer faced a horrifying equestrian accident a few months back. Surprisingly, it did not happen at a racecourse or a premier estate. The accident took place in her backyard. While riding her horse, she banged her head against a fence and suffered a fall.

Palmer became unconscious in seconds. However, she was lucky enough to receive immediate medical aid. Later on, she thanked the World Class program and Jack Berry House, of the Injured Jockeys Fund, for helping her recover.
