The sport of equestrian is one of the best ones out there to enjoy. Hopping on a horse and enjoying the thrill of riding the wind is what makes it so alluring. It also brings a worrisome aspect with it, as the presence of animals not only poses risks to riders but also endangers the lives of the horses involved. There have been protests against equestrianism, and the sport often comes under the scrutiny of animal rights activists for the deaths that happen here consistently. As a result of these fatalities, officials are also taking the right steps to overcome them. But the results are not as satisfying as they should be, and the equine athletes’ lives are cut short constantly during the races.

There is another sad story coming from the equestrian world, as a rider got injured during a race while his equine partner lost his life. The heartbreaking incident unfolded during the World’s Championship Horse Show at the Kentucky State Fair. Investigations have been launched to identify the reasons for the horse’s death.

A Fateful Equestrian Tragedy

As per the reports of Courier Journal, the catastrophic incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday. The rider got injured after the horse stood up on his rear limbs and fell down during Class 130 of the event. In a statement released by the Kentucky State Fair, the officials stated, “We remain in contact with the family and hope for a speedy recovery.”  The rider was later examined by the paramedics and sent to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The peculiar reason for the horse’s death is under investigation.

The deceased’s soul will be taken to Lexington for an autopsy so as to find out the reason for his death. According to them, the mishap was confined to the horse show class 130. According to the schedule of the World’s Championship Horse Show, this particular event was categorized as Equitation: Open Walk-Trot, for the riders of 9 years of age.

Officials also extended their well wishes to the family and stated that they are thinking of them at this time and are hoping for the boy’s speedy recovery. This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as equine fatalities are concerned, as the past few months have witnessed some of the most tragic horse deaths.

A concerning part of this sport

During the various races at Churchill Downs this season, 12 horses have lost their lives. After the criticism, they had to change the venue, and the races were shifted to Ellis Park in Kentucky. Deaths of Kimberley Dream and Lost in Limbo also put a question mark on the Kentucky Derby, which is considered one of the most prestigious equestrian events. Euthanasia is another dark side of equestrianism where horses are put to death humanely after they sustain injuries during the races. A horse named Excursionniste was euthanized after the final race of the Belmont Stakes. The tally of these horse fatalities continues, sparking apprehensions within the equestrian realm.
