The equestrian world is filled with untamed grit and unbridled power. Countless tales of horseback adventures captivate the imagination of fans, from prestigious stake events to show racing and rodeos, even harking back to the days of the Wild West. Among these tales, a story has recently galloped into the spotlight by equestrian enthusiast Jake Harvath. Jake’s journey into the world of horsemanship began at the tender age of 12 when he learned the art of team roping from his neighbors.

By 14, he was working at Sage Creek Equestrian’s barn in exchange for riding lessons, thanks to a help-wanted ad discovered by his mother. At 15, Jake received his first horse as a Christmas gift from his boss, and he even learned the skill of farriery, becoming the craftsman who shod his own horses and built a clientele to sustain his passion. Throughout his life, horses have been an inseparable part of his identity. Jake Harvath embarks on the journey of a lifetime alongside his equine companions.

Alongside his beloved equine companions, Bella, Denver, and Eddy, Jake Harvath is on a monumental expedition that spans 7,000 miles, stretching from the rugged terrain of Utah to the rolling hills of New Jersey and then back to the sun-kissed landscapes of California before ultimately returning to Utah. Jake has aptly named this remarkable project “The Year of the Mustang,” setting out with the ambitious goal of completing this grand journey within a single year. This extraordinary journey, which commenced on September 25th, is meticulously documented on his social media platforms.

Jake passionately expresses, “My greatest experiences over the years have been in training these horses. I’ve transformed wild mustangs into rideable, workable partners, and these experiences have been some of the most incredible in my life”.

With the help of friends and family, Jake diligently uploads and shares videos captured by his GoPro whenever he finds an internet connection. While the record for the longest horseback trip in the U.S. within a year’s time is a noteworthy aspiration, it is not the primary driving force behind Jake’s adventure.

Jake is steadfast in his belief that his three horses will serve as ambassadors, showing the world the immense value of adopting mustangs. His mission is to remind us of the enduring power of horses—their historical role in settling the West—and to raise awareness about the modern-day challenges faced by wild horses.

By the end of this year, he is determined that this message will resonate far and wide. On the morning of September 25th, a small gathering of family and friends bid Jake, Bella, Eddy, and Denver farewell from their starting point at Sage Creek Equestrian in Charleston. With packs strapped high on Eddy and Denver’s backs and Jake in the saddle atop Bella, the trio set forth, clip-clopping across U.S. 189.

In a recent update, Jake reflected “We’re two weeks in. We’re moving slowly but we’re moving”.  As he forges onward with 90 miles behind him and over 6,900 more to go, Jake remains undaunted, fearlessly embracing the unknown.
