The 149th edition of the Kentucky Derby has finally got its winner. Mage, who had 15-1 winning odds, etched his name in the weight time of the Kentucky Derby by clinching this year’s trophy. However, Mage’s win was completely unexpected, as a multitude of spectators and bettors anticipated Tapit Trice’s win after Kentucky Derby’s favorite Forte scratched from the races earlier in the morning.
Commencing the race from the number 8th post position with odds 15-1, no one thought that Mage is going to stand atop the podium. However, after months of anticipation and pondering over this year’s Kentucky Derby winner, the 149th installment finally got its triumphant.

Mage, with Jockey Javier Castellano, crossed the line first in the time frame of 2:01:57 and astounded everyone with his incredible winning spree. Following his commendable feat, Mage will be awarded a $1.86 million worth purse, a six-pound gold trophy, and a blanket of roses. Interestingly, the 149th derby winner was trained under the guidance of Venezuelan coach Gustavo Delgado. Now, while Mage finished first, Two Phil’s (9-1) bagged the second place and Angel of Empire (4-1) finished third.

However, for over a few months now, bettors had put their money on thoroughbreds who flaunted impressive profiles to date. The top contenders were Forte, Tapit Trice, and Angel Of Empire with all odds in their favor. Nonetheless, with several scratches earlier and the unfortunate demise of seven of the contenders, the post positions got maneuvered a lot in the past few days.

Forte’s ruling out didn’t favor Mage in the race of favorites
In the last week, five thoroughbreds were scratched from the big race, including the morning-line favorite Forte, who got excluded just a few hours before the race began. It was the first time since 1936 that five thoroughbreds were ruled out from the Kentucky Derby races. Nevertheless, Mage was not among the pre-race favorites, even after Forte dropped out.

Though it’s not quite the massive upset that marked last year with the victory of Rich Strike, it’s just another year in which the Kentucky Derby winner was not the most popular or talked about. Interestingly, Mage’s bettors weren’t the only ones who will benefit from the results. Mage’s is owned by 391 stakeholders, so there is a multitude of investors who put their belief in the 149th Kentucky Derby winner.
