Jennifer Gates has been a driving force behind promoting any kind of social cause and leading the charge to make this world a better place. However, the equestrian gets it from her parents. While her father tech magnate Bill Gates is a philanthropist, her mother Melinda Gates is a staunch believer in empowering women. In a recent TIME Op-Ed piece, Melinda Gates presented an example for all women by citing the first lady of Tennessee.
After Melinda Gates’s TIME piece spread everywhere, she also appeared in an interview where she was asked about quoting Anne Belle Clement O’Brien, the first lady of Tennesse politics. Melinda Gates proudly expressed the quote and Jennifer Gates is in support of it.

Jennifer Gates recently took to her Instagram story and shared a small clip from a CNN interview with her mother. In the clip, from the interview, CNN reporter Poppy Harlow asked Melinda Gates, “So you start this Op-Ed in TIME, writing, ‘In 1976, Anna Belle Clement O’Brien, known as the first lady of Tennessee politics, ran for office on the slogan ‘A woman’s place is in the House… and the Senate too.””
The story was from an Instagram post by Harlow in her account, where she continued the question, “Why is so much of your effort and money going to get women elected?” The TIME piece of Melinda Gates was also about making a concerted effort in creating more spaces for women in the office. She took a very important stance on uplifting women, and her daughter stood right beside her.

How Melinda Gates planned the timing of her TIME Op-Ed piece
Melinda Gates wrote this TIME Op-Ed piece and took her staunch stance on women’s rights, right at the one-year anniversary mark of the overturning of Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion illegal. She witnessed that, more often than not, important decisions are made for women and not by the women themselves. So it was important for her to speak up when it mattered the most. “Was that a coincidence?” asked Harlow to Gates about publishing her piece at the one-year mark.
Melinda Gates clearly expressed that it wasn’t a coincidence, but rather a manner of reminding the American public of that decision and how much more things need to change. The interview further delved into deeper political issues, but Melinda Gates expressed her desires clearly and how she wants to see the change happen. When the piece first came out, Jennifer Gates was delighted to read it and shared it with everyone. She is still supportive of her mother’s beliefs shoulder-to-shoulder.
