In the enchanting world of equestrianism, where the bond between horse and rider is cherished, a troubling issue looms over the industry, threatening the well-being of these majestic creatures. While equestrian sports have long been enjoyed by people around the globe, controversies surrounding animal cruelty have cast a shadow over the sport.

Reports of horses tragically losing their lives during the training or demanding races have sparked a conversation about the welfare of these noble animals. There have been people who have come out in support of the animals in order to extricate them from abuse and slaughtering. One such couple runs a rescue stable and works constantly for the sake of these horses.

Amidst these concerns, a story of kindness emerges from the depths of the racehorse industry. Kimberly Terrana, a dedicated individual from Laplace with a profound love for horses, embarked on a mission to rescue and protect horses from the horrors of slaughterhouses and other forms of abuse. With her husband, Terrana established St. John Riding Stables, a sanctuary where horses find solace and rehabilitation from the traumas they have endured.

Interestingly, in a recent interaction with L’Observateur, she shared various nooks and crannies of her drive to protect Cattles. Citing the reasons behind the brutal act, Terrana conceded, “The biggest issue in the industry is overbreeding, and the second worse is slaughter because there aren’t enough places to house the animals.”

Terrana’s commitment to her cause is evident in her poignant words: “I don’t sell horses. I get them and rehabilitate them, and they stay with me forever. They will have the best life, whether it’s five days or five years. They will be loved.”

With her determination, she not only funds the care of these rescued horses through two full-time jobs but also provides valuable training lessons to the children of St. John and the neighborhood. Terrana firmly believes that it is the younger generation who will spearhead the transformation , on which she said “I do it because I love it. One of these kids is going to change the legislation about slaughter. It’s got to be a child, because adults don’t care.”

Nurturing Empathy and Empowering Change

Terrana’s journey began in Las Vegas, but destiny eventually led her back to her roots with four rescued horses, where she set up St. John Riding Stables. Operating as a Limited Liability Company with limited resources and space, the stable is now home to eighteen horses. Each of these remarkable animals has its own harrowing tale of survival, ranging from being beaten by heartless individuals to being rescued from the clutches of slaughterhouses.

Some horses endured neglect simply because their colors did not meet breeders’ expectations. Remarkably, among them is a horse who once earned her owner a staggering $100,000 but was destined for the slaughterhouse after sustaining an injury on the track. Today, all of these horses thrive under Terrana’s devoted care.

Recently she faced devastation caused by Hurricane Ida inflicted further hardships on St. John Riding Stables. However, one of Terrana’s students’ family members stepped up, providing assistance in repairing the stable’s damaged roofs. Talking about her stable she said “There is space to experiment and make mistakes. It’s really good for traumatized horses.”
