The 2023 season stands as a pinnacle in McLain Ward’s illustrious equestrian career. Hailing from Brewster, N.Y., Ward showcased his mastery by campaigning with 11 distinct horses on the international stage. Notably, the season commenced with a remarkable achievement. Ward secured back-to-back victories atop HH Azur in the Rolex Grand Prix of Geneva. He also added the Rolex Grand Prix of ‘s-Hertogenbosch at the Dutch Masters to his tally and name.
McLain Ward has been honoured as the 2023 USEF Equestrian of the Year by the United States Equestrian. However, during his heartfelt acceptance speech, Ward acknowledged Lee McKeever, a moment that resonated deeply. Ward’s early struggle, as he mentioned, ‘I was sleeping on the floor,’ stirred emotions and left a lasting impact on everyone present there.

McLain and Lee’s 35-year enduring journey is a tale to tell
In a recent Instagram post, the U.S. equestrian community shared a poignant moment as they warmly welcomed Lee to their show. The host set the tone by articulating the collective dedication to securing the United States’ premier standing in the sport during “An Olympic year.” A heartfelt recounting of a speech by McLain captured the essence of their relentless pursuit, which was read by the host of the show. McLain expressed gratitude for the honour bestowed by the US Equestrian community. Lee’s journey from arriving in America at 18 to work for McLain’s father is remarkable. It evolved into the steadfast partnership that has stood the test of 35 years. What started as a 13-year-old McLain finding a brotherly figure in Lee has blossomed into a dynamic partnership, as Ward said. They have weathered the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, both professionally and personally.

From stable floors to sporting
McLain painted a vivid picture of their intertwined lives and careers. From the humble beginnings of McLain sleeping on the floor of the groom’s house to the collaborative endeavour that defines their current success. McLain delved deeper into Lee’s unique genius. McLain described Lee as “Lee is the true horseman. I believe true geniuses don’t often realize they’re a genius, and that’s true for Lee.“ He further added, “wakes up every morning thinking about the horses. He spends his days figuring out what the horses need to be the best, both in the sport and, more importantly, in their lives.”
